Okay, so I've got the option of getting a blackberry thru work or getting $100/mo towards a smartphone of my choosing. I'm not sure of the Blackberry model yet.

I was looking at the Tmobile G2. I really want a phone/service that I can tether with as I'm on a train for about 2 hours each day. San Francicsco/Bay Area.

Any advice?

Thanks

Get the Blackberry. Don't waste your money on some damn Tmobile phone. I wasn't even aware Tmobile had real mobile broadband, much less tethering.

Edit: OK, I have no idea if Blackberries can tether.

If you're in the bay area, you're in T-Mobile's HSPA+ coverage area, you can pull a solid 4-6 MBPS down with the G2 if you tether with it.

T-Mobile allows unlimited tethering with bberry phones, just a thought if you would use it heavily. I think its also allowed for Android, but I'm not sure about it 100%.

<--- Curve 8900 on Tmo for 2 years.

Well before the fanboys chime in - both Android and Blackberry phones can tether, the issue is really what else you expect your phone to do for you. Will you be a heavy email user? Web, apps, games? If you want good quality advice, its a good idea if you post more info on what your specific needs are so people here can provide some recommendations.

FWIW, I've tethered extensively on Metrolink in Southern California with both Sprint (EVDO) and Verizon (3G) and I think you will find the performance to be "hit and miss". Our trains down here get up to about 90mph during rush hour, and even the best phones are going to have a hell of a time keeping a reliable connection open. The issue isn't the phone, the reception, or the network quality - its the speed at which your data connection must be transferred from one tower to the next. As you move along the tracks, each tower is in range for only a few seconds, meaning your phone (and the cell network) is having a hell of a time keeping your connection open as you zip along the tracks.

For browsing websites and firing off emails you might not notice any issues at all. But if you are trying to keep persistent connections open like SSH, FTP, SIP/VOIP etc. or doing remote desktop stuff - expect to run into lots of dropped connections on your commute.

Maybe WiMax or 4G/LTE is a better alternative for this type of situation - I haven't tried it but if you make the jump, please reply back and let us know how you like it.

Good luck!

Whether you get a G2 on Tmobile or a different phone on another carrier, I would definitely take the $100 and get my own plan. There are much better options out there than Blackberry right now.

1) "Some damn T-Mobile phone" might be the best Android phone on the market
2) T-Mobile's HSPA+ is as fast (or faster) than Sprint's WiMax 4G service

I'm not going to read the rest of this thread but I will give my 2 pennies.

If your work email will place nice wtih Android, get the G2. I LOVE my G2 and I am a cell phone snob. $100 a month on Tmo will get you basically unlimited everything (as long as you don't use a ton of voice). Tethering is there and as long as you don't go over 5 gigs a month, Tmo is fine with that. You may also find that you don't need your laptop because you can do so much on the phone. You can even use phonemypc to log into your home or work computer and do everything from there.

Get the G2

also, even if you do go over 5 gigs a month, tmobile only throttles the speed. they don't hit you with overage charges.

i've hit 6-9 gigs on a couple months with my nexus, and they didn't do anything. the throttling is supposedly a new thing though.

again, it depends what you want to do w/ the phone though. G2 will be better for web browsing/games/google integration. blackberry may have better battery life and work email integration/support.

Tmo may not be 4gish but their HSPDSSAS+ (whatever its called) is damn fast. I have a Vibrant and I get, on average, 5-6mbps down and 1.5-2mbps up and that is on 3g in NYC. They may be the 4th largest in the US but they have a solid network as long as you live in an area that gives you a good signal. I tether off my Vibrant and its great. Damn fast IMO.

I'm deciding soon, the Amazon deal looks good. On Cnet as one of the cons it says that it doesn't support tethering.. do you know what thats about?
