OK, WTF is THIS!? (warning - gross)

OK, so I get home from work, take a shower, and throw on a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. I sit down at my computer, and I scratch the side of my knee. As I'm doing so, my hand bumps into the inner portion of my thigh, and I notice a lump on the inside of my thigh about an inch above my knee.

This thing is about the size of a quarter around, and maybe a quarter of an inch high off of the skin. It was roughly circular, but the top of it was flat. So I'm staring at this thing, and, ignoring all advice my mother ever gave me (let it alone or it'll never heal!) I start poking the lump. It doesn't hurt or anything, but it feels weird, kinda smooshy. So I squeeze it a little bit (thinking it's a zit), but nothing happens. I poke it a little bit longer, trying to figure out WTF it is. Finally, I get crazy. I pull out my pocket knife and poke it a little bit. At first nothing happens, the skin is thicker or tougher than it feels. I push harder, and slide the blade inside. Still no pain at all.

But when I pull the knife blade out, the little lump deflates like a frickin' balloon, and a bunch of blood rushes out. So at this point, I'm wondering if it IS a zit, but there's no pus or anything . . . just blood, but the blood doesn't even look right . . . it's very dark, and there are dark specks in it. So I get a towel and clean up my leg, and I squeeze on what's left of the lump. More blood keeps coming out, but it doesn't seem like it's bleeding from a cut, just like there was a bunch of blood in the area and it's coming out now. Eventually it stops, and the lump flattens out and looks relatively normal except for the cut in the skin.

I didn't notice it this morning - I'm pretty sure it wasn't there - but obviously this is freaking the hell out of me. What is that thing? Some kind of tumor? Should I go to the doctor? I went over myself, and I don't see any more of the things, but I didn't notice any this morning, either!

<< Should I go to the doctor? >>

Stop asking a computer forum, and go see a doctor who knows what he/she is talking about.

It's called a blood blister and happens when you break one layer of skin
but not the surface skin layer. You don't need to see a doctor. You
probably banged your leg against something earlier that day. The blood
would look black because the blood cells die due to a lack of oxygen (since
the skin would heal beneath the blood pool).

Hell no, don't ever consider going to a doctor. Just listen to the professional advice of your fellow anandtechies and you will be fine. So how much are coffins these days?

Ewwwww!

The only thing I pop like that are blisters on the bottom of my feet. :D

That's only when I go beach and I'm walking around bare foot. :D

If it was a hard small lump at first, and you squeezed it blood and sought like of puss came out, its usually a worm of some sought. I had that too and went to the doctor, he gave me some cream to put on the lump, and eventually it went away. Although its gross that you actually popped it. eww.

After poking on it with a completely unsanitary pocketknife, I cannot even imagine how much worse it could get. :disgust:

Let's see.... poke at it then cut it with a knife and then ask a comp. forum for help = Free for the most part
Going to a doctor, who refers you to a leg-lump specialist, who then gives you a cream to put on (which is the same cream that all doctors use for everything) = 3 years' paycheck.

I think you made the right decision :D

I cleaned it with peroxide afterward and put Neosporin and a band-aid on it.

And you guys aren't getting any pics. ;)

Would that have been so big, though? This thing was probably about the size of a ping-pong ball cut in half.

You need to clean and cauterized the wound. Stuff it with gunpowder and light a match.

It sounds like a boil, but the location doesnt quite fit, and you didnt say that the thing burned like fire, while you were poking on it.
