Up until this weekend I had no idea HDCP even existed, nor did I care. When Vista comes out, everyone is going to care. This way your Blue Ray HD DVDs will play in 720 or 1080p, and not be forced down to 480p due to lack of hardware copy protection. I just bought a 931BW with HDCP from the BB BF sale and have "discovered" this feature. It is 1440x900, but I do miss the little extra height of 1280x1024. But for $129 its hard to complain.

Then of course youll have to buy another video card, as they have HDCP hardware but no "keys" to authenticate back to the player. So youll get broadcast 480 or no picture at all! Doh! :(

But at least youll have the moniter out of the way.

Pretty old news. I think it was mentioned when they announced WinFs will not launch with Vista.

I agree though it's crap

HD-DVD requires it too. :p

However, if you don't plan on watching High-Def on your PC, your next monitor will not require HDCP.

I'm not buying BluRay or HDDVD until one becomes a standard and gets cheap and the other is wiped out like laserdiscs. I rarely watch movies on the PC but this is just another reason to quit upgrading the PC and buy standalone components. I've pretty much given up on PC gaming due to issues with drivers, patches, copy protection etc... when the new consoles are as good or better than a pc.

I feel the same way, atleast about the movies. I have no interest in watching movies on my computer. I enjoy laying down on my couch or in bed and watching one on my TV. Plus, I dont have any problem with the current quality on regular DVDs.

Prices on solid state media needs to drop a bit more and production needs to be ramped up insanely high... we shouldn't still be using moving parts IMO

HDCP is a load of crap. All this talk about how it will be required for your next monitor/video card/cable/etc is a load of BS. Do you see ANYTHING out that checks for HDCP? No. And anything that does will fail miserably. Why? Because it is a technology that will only hurt the honest & ignorant consumer.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is full of it.

Misleading title. Should be "If you are dumb enough to buy a blu-ray drive, then you will need a new monitor."

Sony Blu-Ray = Sony MiniDisk's

I really don't think it'll catch on. Although, MD's are a little more common in Japan iirc.

Meh, don't care.

I watch DVDs in the comfort of my living room in my recliner, not sitting in an office chair in front of a desk.

BR will probably get a nice boost because of the PS3.

I know several people that will buy the PS3 mainly for the BR drive when it comes out in europe next year...

One thing i have always been curious of is if this will have any effect on HD-DVD content played off a 360.
