OK, which Far Cry 2 pre-order do I get?

Do I get the gamestop one (that Ubisoft just sent out an email about)
which has the 'limited edition' upgrade of a paper map, 6 extra
missions, and better packaging? $49.95 US

Do I get the Ubi-soft/Steam direct download version, which is
discounted 5 dollars off the regular price? $44.95 US

Do I get the Circuit City one, which has a free {downloadable} copy of
the original Far Cry (a $10 dollar value) included? $49.95 US

Or, do I go to a UK company and get the 'exclusive collectors edition'
with wooden box, map, tee-shirt, making of DVD, and Art book? £34.99
which is $60.29 US plus whatever it costs to ship to the US.

Or, do I wait for an as yet unseen sale at some local store like Best
Buy or Target a week or so after release?

Help me out here? And don't even get me started about which Fallout 3
version to buy. And please don't mention that C&C Red Alert 3 is about
to come out either.

I think you can get a $10 gift certificate at Amazon.com w/ pre-order as well (for the first 5000, maybe?)

Fry's usually has high profile games for $7-$10 off retail for the first week or so they're released, so that's another option if you have one in town.

If you don't have the original FarCry, I think GameStop's is the best with the extra missions. You'll probably be able to DL them for free in the near future but whatever. The original is worth playing though.

It's mentioned in the Far Cry Wiki that the original version of Far Cry is available for free download, so the Circuit City offer may not be that valuable.

Would you have any difficulty playing the UK version on US Servers, or because of the region code on your PC's DVD drive?

My Recommendation:

If your primary focus with this game is on the single player experience, go for the GameStop version with extra missions and 'world' map.

If your primary focus is on the multiplayer game, the extra missions and map are of less value (multiplayer is on seperate smaller maps). Buy a version for $5 off.

Another point to consider. Usually, if you want to sell the game later (fat chance, this game will rock!), you buy a "hard" copy, rather than a download. I'm not sure how the DRM will affect this possibility.

that free download is CRAP! I tried to download it a month ago (knowing it's ad supported) when I tried to install it it gave me an error talking about the free period is over and it was just a limited time offer. Game wouldn't play at all. I dunno why the hell they still allow you to download the games with the ad support, it seems all of them have been disabled from play, but all can still be downloaded.

Maybe there's a way to get the free version working still? I don't care about ad's but I would love to play F.C. again on my newer system so I can max the settings out :D

why not just pirate it again? i'm assuming thats what you did originally since you don't have the discs to reinstall it.

I lost the original media, it was free with an AMD CPU bundle I bought. I am careless and lose shit. I'm sure I might be able to find the DVD if I looked around hard enough, but chances are it's not in a case and probably too scratched up to even play :) I would have never bought the game in the first place, free games with hardware is how I get almost all my games lol.

Wow, you're an asshole. I had the game as well, since it came free with my 7800GT, but can't find my discs, either.

I went ahead with the Gamestop one since its supposed to be upgraded to the Limited Edition with extra levels, map and special box. to me thats better than saving 5 to 10 bucks for regular version.

Right. I just saw the Frys ad for this week, and they have Far Cry 2 for 44.95, basically the 5 dollars off deal.

I think what I'll do is wait for release, then go to Circuit City and get them to price match Frys so I'll get the free download of Far Cry 1 and also the 5 dollars off. Circuit City has the Far Cry 2 deal in their print ad this week to, so I can walk in to the store and pick it up. No need to pre-order. Also, it would seem to me that the extra missions will eventually get put on the website for everyone to download, and I don't need a map or special box. Just give me the game, and time to play it. :)

yeah if I knew I could get the missions without getting it at Gamespot I would. the way I look at though is that for just $5 more than the best deal out there for the rgular retail version I will have the extra missions for sure. other than that I couldnt care less about the special box or map.

For me, I think getting the full version of Far Cry 1 is better, since it's a whole game, not just a few extra missions.

EDIT: what the hell is wrong with the quote feature???

I'm lazy, so I'll do none of those and get the Steam version. That way i get it on release day and don't have to go anywhere.

I would agree, but I hate Circuit City so much that I vowed never to shop there again. I was tempted to pre-order Far Cry 2 from them at first, but my hatred for CC and decision to hold off on the game stopped me from doing so. Unfortunately, I stumbled upon some money today, and being the consumer whore that I am, went ahead and pre-ordered it at GameStop because I was in the neighborhood :(.

I used steam. I like to get games on steam when I can because I lose/destroy game disks too easily. I wish I'd gotten Crysis from Steam instead of EA because steam keeps your games forever apparently while EA has that stupid 6 month download limit.
