Ok, what is the best camera for 400$ I want a superzoom, raw capability, and sd memory if possible. ..

So what do I have to work with?

Superzoom #1 priority (10x or better)
Raw #2
and SD Memory - well I could be swayed on this one.


 
You don't have much to work with...pretty much nothing at all with a $400 price cap. Nikon 8700/8800, Fuji s5200/s9000, or a Panasonic FZ30 will do the job.
 
Ive been looking at the fuji and the panasonic now that you mention those. I've got great reviews on the s5200 - other than the controls are buried (pretty typical) and the panasonic - I'm still leary of these cameras - do they hold up? When I think camera, I've never thought 'panasonic'.
 
Olympus SP-500 UZ - what about this model 369$ at staples, 10x zoom, writes raw - uses xd cards (the only neg for me). . .

Anyone know about this?
 
might want to go with a second hand 300d and get a "superzoom" lense later on when you can afford it

or the canon s2.. but I think thats more expensive,

The s2 doesn't support RAW, but I like the idea for a used 300d.
 
Ok the panasonic seems to be retailing for 500 and up. If I'm going to cross that threshhold, I might as well get a pentax *ist or a d50. . .

Staying with my under 400 - what is not up to par with the fuji s5200? I know it is an excellent low light shooter (which I love). . .
 
What sucks about going to the full slr for me is that I could not afford the lens game. I'd want ever lens under the sun. I just want a good general purpose low light long zoom good camera. . . and one that I can haul a tripod out with occasionally and do some 'artistic' stuff. . .

That's your problem. You don't need every lens under the sun. Just get the camera and a telephoto lens to go along with your 18-70mm(or whatever the d50 comes with).

If you break that price and go D50, you still won't have any zoom capability close to what the FZ30 has.

I had the S5200 before my FZ20 and it was a good camera, but panasonic's OIS just sold me.
 
i have a panasonic fz4 and would recommend the fz series. the olympus was the only other compact series with great zoom but no image stabilization.

My old camera is an old Olympus3030z. Excelent camera for its time, extremely slow startup time, slow focus, lack of color, but awsome image quality 😛

My gripe is this. With it came a cd with drivers and software for moving pictures to the computer called Camedia. It came with version 2.01 or 2.0. Worked pretty good in Windows2000, was never that happy with it, but it worked.

But when I upgraded to WindowsXP it got worse, the software just didnt work at all. After reading about it on the internet and thier website I saw I needed version 2.5. Ok I'll just download it, but no, it was only awailable for ordering... for about 20-30 bucks! I asked around on their forum and quickly saw that loads of people were very unhappy about this moronic decision to make people pay to use their camera on WindowsXP.

Thats the reason why I never ever recomend olympus to anyone (even though I thought about getting the Olympus8080z at one time, went with the canon 350d instead, dont regret it one bit 😀
