Tossup between an earthquake and you being a moron.
Seriously. Has no one born after like 1985 ever heard of research?

Dude, all the major news sources are riddled with videos/animations describing what happened. Try CNN.com, abcnews.com, usatoday.com, nytimes.com, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc...
Basically, indian plate slipped under the southeast asian plate, pushing up the other plate and raising a huge column of water. Then the other plate fell back into place, sending the water crashing back down. This worked like a big 'pump' or plunger, radiating out a large wave (think of ripples when you drop a rock into a pond.) Wave is moving at 500mph. When this wave nears shallow water/shoreline, it compresses, making the wave taller and it crests.
This tsunami wasn't the popular depiction of a 100ft tall wave towering over everything (like in the movie 'Deep Impact'.) Rather it was a 'shorter' 10-20ft wave (still friggin' tall!) but with more volume and speed, sending it far inland.
I guess it would help if I watched the news![]()
Aside from the lack of research. Don't any schools have geography or science anymore? Or have they degraded so badly that plate tectonics aren't even taught?

Nope. I went to Detroit Public Schools so please excuse me.
Actually, one did a couple of hundred years ago. Another could happen any time.Originally posted by: jinduy
whew i was imagining what would happen if a tsunami hit the west coast here, and first thing that came to mind was deep impact... if i saw that thing about to hover over me... i'd think i'd crap in my pants for fun.

One more way to wipe us out:
10. killer asteroids, comets and meteor showers
9. microscopic black hole
8. gamma ray burst from supernova
7. rogue planet or star
6. global warming
5. viral plague, bioweapons
4. accidental or intentional nuclear launch
3. killer earthquake
2. zombie apocalypse
1. tsunami!
Sleep well.

What's actually amazing is that in this day and age, there are still earthquakes that could cause major damage.
