I just got the mx700 and was wondering if it is ok to use the mouse without a mouse pad and also does it damage the mouse to not use one.

Thanks,

You may scratch the sliding surface a bit, but it's not a big deal. I personally dont like using a mouse without a pad.

Then you have a sh1tty optical mouse. I had to turn down the rate on the newest optical mouse I got because it was too sensitive/precise. Trackball mice also don't last as long because they get dirty and stuff. I think I've been through 3 or 4 optical mice; one was due to my little sister spilling something on it, one was due to the mouse key sticking, and the other 2 are because now I have my own rig, I need one for that and one for the family computer.

Optical mice work better without mousepads. Certain colors on patterned mousepads can cause an optical mouse to become disoriented. I had a hard rock mousepad that I got free that I used with my optical mouse, and everytime it passed over a certain section of a flame on the mousepad, it would flip out and my cursor would bouce around the screen. It was in the center of the pad, too... so it happened often. Got rid of the pad and it hasn't happened since. I can count the number of times I was positioning my crosshairs over someone's head in CS and it happened... only to make the shot go right above my head and have the person hear me.
