ok to eat expired chips?

i still have a box of 50, 1oz individual packed Lays Classic chips. it had a 'best by Nov.20, 2012' label on it. i just ate a bag and didn't notice any difference. ok to pass these out to kids?!

They just won't taste very fresh. Its not like they are from 2005 or anything.

I personally would eat them without hesitation and have probably done so anyway.

I'd give them to kids. If they taste fine, they're fine. All food I'm aware of has built in safeguards for badness after sell by date. If it looks/smells/tastes bad, it's probably bad. The date has little meaning other than a recommendation.

Just got back from a trip to Dominican Republic. Was eating a bag of lays that had a date of march 2012. Tasted ok, and never got sick.

Chips aren't one of those things that I would be overly cautious about. Would I eat them? Depends on how hungry I am, but yes, absolutely.

it says: 'best by Nov.20, 2012'. Not you will get terrible diarrhea if you eat these after expiration date. Since the chips are sealed and filled with fat and salt, no bacteria are going to live there, and the only thing you might experience is less taste/crispyness.

The only concern would be the oil going rancid. If it has you will know the minute a bag is opened as it will smell like paint thinner.

Most chip bags are flushed with nitrogen to displace the oxygen to prevent this. The film itself is an excellent oxygen barrier so oxygen migration into the bag is minimal. Now if the bag has pin holes the nitrogen would be replaced by oxygen increasing the rate of rancidity.

Be smart about this, only give about 1/4 of the bags to kids. If the kids croak pitch the rest. If the kids survive the chips are safe and you can eat the rest yourself.

SE, you need to do one basic scientific test first before you let the kids eat them.

Take 1 chip, sprinkle liberally with Sodium Cyanide & eat it. (Acquire just enough cyanide for 1 chip, this stuff could be dangerous to innocent children)
If you suffer no ill effects within 1 hour, the unopened bags are safe for the kids.

hmm, you may be on to something. the oil didn't smell but had a stronger aftertaste and lingered in the mouth for awhile. i think i will play it safe and just toss em

AFAIK, even grossly rancid oil isn't harmful. If you enjoyed the taste well enough, I'd just use them.

They might taste a bit funny but it's probably ok.

1 year expired? Probably taste like crap. I forgot Halloween left overs in a cupboard I don't go in very often, found them 2 years later. Threw them out. 😛 It was cheesies too. If it was plain chips or something, probably not as bad.
