I'm too fat! So it's about time I start losing some weight. I came up with rather aggressive plan to lose weight.

1. No candy or soda (except maybe sugar-free sodas sometime)
2. eat mostly vegetables. Drop meat, cheese and the like almost entirely
3. Spend weekends fasting (48 hours. Not dangerous, but quite healthy in fact). Drink plenty of water.
4. Exercise

1.and 2. accomplished, I will start 3 next weekend. 4. was started yesterday when I enrolled on a Krav Maga class. Damn I was exhausted! But I felt great :D!

Well, good luck, but fasting isn't the way to go. Everything else sounds good, if you can keep it up.

By fasting you also deprive your body of nutrients.

I need to lose weight too...god...I'm almost at 135.

Fasting came along as a bonus. I'm aware that as a method of losing weight it isn't the best there is. But it's healthy (if it's under 48 hours) and doesn't cause any harm

Not really. From what I have heard, fasting for 48 hours will just use your fat-reserves and burn the impurities that have been accumulating there. If you do it for a longer time, it could cause problems.

You're right, fasting for limited periods of time isn't that harmful, but what will happen is you will eat more when you finally do eat. Also, fasting will deprive your body of certian nurtiants. My grandmother fasted regularly, for religious reasons, and her blood sugar levels dropped dramatically, she became weaker overall, tired easily, and wasn't able to fight off illness. I'm not a nutritianist, only training I know is my pre med stuff. I think the trick is to eat "healthy", exercise regularly, and try and keep indulgences to a minimum. But what do I know, I'm trying to gain weight. ;)

I have backup-plans if I start to get weak from fasting. If it seems that it's not good, I will drop it or limit it. But I will give it a shot. I have been thinking about drinking sugar-free juice while fasting and eating some fruit, so I would get some nutrients. And I have promised myself that I will _not_ eat like a horse next time I eat after the fasting ;)

What your reasoning for cutting out meat?

My suggestion is a meat and vegtables, very low carb, no sugar/starch period, and lots lots lots lots lots lots of exercies and water of course.

Keep a food diary of what you eat, the total calories, fat calories, etc...
It opened my eyes to just how much I was eating before I started keeping track.

- No fried foods, at all (maybe once a month). Stick with fish, bread (not too much though), pastas, fruits/vegetables and water. However, be aware that eating too much of anything will add weight, not just sugar, ice cream, etc.

- Regular exercise. Can't emphasize this enough. Without exercise you'll just be skinny, assuming of course you're not naturally well built. It depends on the person, but assuming you?re relatively young (under 40) and not suffering from some type of injury, two days a week of cardiovascular workout (walking, jogging or perhaps running) in addition to 2-3 days of muscle-building is an excellent way to get in shape fast. You?re body will probably hurt after that first workout, don?t worry.

- Don't all of the sudden gorge. It's hard for most people at first (though different people obviously have different tolerances), but you've simply got to be disciplined. Try to think of something you're good at and pretend you're just as good at that as you are at keeping in shape?erm, uh, or whatever gets you motivated. :D

That concludes our AnandTech fitness FAQ. ;)

Already taken care of. I eat some bread, but only dark rye bread (delicious, not to mention healthy).

- Regular exercise.

Check. I have 2x 1.5 hours of Krav Maga training a week.

Have to look in to that. thanks for the tip :).

No problem. I eat a rice-cake (you know, about 0 calories each) if I get the urge to eat something ;).

I question the whole fasting thing and radical diet change. I also dont know what kind of a schedule you're on, but if it is anything "fast" exercise needs to at least be #2 on your list.

I went from ~350g carbs, 70g protein, 80g fat pre diet to ~175g carbs, 120g protein, 30g fat on diet. I went to bed hungry every night, but I went from 215 > 192 lbs in 2 months. Thats 26% > 18% body fat and about 5" around my abdomen. Next step is to drop my bf% down to ~8-10 and get my overall weight to ~180-185. I have 4 months to accomplish that.

I had to "fast" the last 4 days eating 2 turkey sandwiches, a banana and drinking maybe 5 cups of water all combined to lose the final 5 lbs. I pigged out on pizza and replenished fluids and am up 2 lbs since thursday :/

The list isn't in any kind of particular order. The diet-change isn't really that radical. The most radical thing is the dropping of candy and soda, and that's mostly just because I have gotten used to drinking coke etc. So it's mostly mental. Switching to mostly vegetables isn't that big a deal, I ate vegetables even before I went on a diet. I just increased their share of the food I eat. fasting could be considered radical, but I want to try it out. if it doesn't work, I'll stop it.

A friend of mine does 21 day fasts now and again. He swears by them. He drinks plenty of water along with different juices.

And when you start eating normally again you will gain your weight +5kg...

It isn't all that hard to loose weight, there are two ways to do it right, no 1 is the simplest, eat what you usually eat, just eat less...

No2 is harder, it requires you to eat like you always knew you should, that is three meals and two snacks between meals, always eat both fat, carbs and protein with every meal, stay away from any fat-free products, don't eat highly processed carbs besides for breakfast and after training, if you do eat processed carbs at any other time, up the fat a notch to curb the insulin response...

Fasting for ANY period of time is unhealthy, your body goes into the same mode as when you are sick, the lack of calories breaks down muscle tissue and you put a lot of strain on your kidneys...

Naturally, excersise is part of the program, work it into your daily schedule, if i were you i would do a combination of aerobic and anaerobic training, take a brisk walk for 30 mins before breakfast, that is the aerobic part, hit the weights for 30 mins anytime during the day, that is the anaerobic part...

The problem people have with dieting is that they change everything, can't live with the change, go back to normal and gain more weight than they lost...

A diet that you cannot live the rest of your life on isn't going to work, if you do it right, after you have lost the extra weight, you just up the calories to maintenance levels, you shouldn't have to change anything else...

1. Good. Simple sugars are the dietary Debbil.

2. Semi-good. You need to cut out fatty meats, but keep the lean protein sources like chicken and some fish.

3. Not healthy, not good. Fasting on a weekly basis will just throw a huge wrench in things. Do drink plenty of H20 as most people are chronically underhydrated.

4. Good. Much easier to burn extra calories each day than to just starve yourself. I lose weight whether I like it or not if I get more than 10 hours per week in on the bike.

Bad idea if you want long term weight loss. Great idea if you want to end up fatter than you started.

Fasting only lowers your metabolism and teaches your body how to more efficiently store fat. Your body think's it's starving, and therefore does everything it can to build back up it's stores of fat. This is why reduced calorie, low anything diets fail.

The only healthy way to lose weight is to exercise. 40 minutes of cardio, 4 days a week at your target heart rate will do wonders, and you'll actually feel MORE energetic, rather than starved and weak. I'd also throw in some moderate weight lifting as well. Higher muscle mass means your body burns more calories...even at rest.

This worked perfectly for me. I went from a 35" waist to a 31" waist and lost more than 30 lbs of fat in just a few short months by using coolrunning.com's "couch to 5K" program and lifting weights. I NEVER went hungry, nor did I cut out meat or dairy. In fact, my calorie intake now is almost double what it was when I started.

You're fat because the body is meant to WORK. Starving it will be counter productive.
