probably around $500

Well if it comes out with that price tag it won't sell!!. I'd be crazy to pay $500 US(750 Can)+Tax for a damn video card!!. They should release it around $350 US maximum. That way when I pay $500 Canadian for it(I've paid that before) I'll just kick myself in the a$$ a little bit and forget about the price more quickly.

Or you could just WAIT a little bit. BTW it won't be $500 US...maybe for the All in Wonder model, but not for the regular one. ATI would be nuts to do that!

To be honest, I am finding a lot of similarities between the R300 impending launch and nVidia's launch of ther NV20 (GF3) last year. The one thing I've noticed is that the R300, like tghe NV20 was, is being produced on last generation's manufacturing technology (the NV20 was made at first on the same .18um process trhat the GF2 Ultra and co were) and that the GF3 eventually moved to .15um and that the R300 will eventually move to .13um as well. And thus I think some comparisiions between the GF3 price and R300 are in order. I expect the R300 to cost about the same price that the GF3 did at launch and that the Parhelia is at. $350-400. Thaat is only $50-100 more than the Ti 4600 and if the performance is there, it will sell. Sure for the mainstream, the GF4 ti 4200 will still rule (NV20 didn't move into the mainstream until it moved down to .15um with the GF3 Ti, I expect similar thing to happen with the R300). I personally dont think the R200 core has what it takes to compete with the GF4 ti, and the outlook for the RV250 Certainly isnt good. We'll find out on wednesday.

ATI, on the other hand, has been producing chips on both 0.15 and 0.13-micron processes to secure an earlier product release time. According to the company?s schedule, it will shift its high-end chip production gradually to 0.13-micron fabrication by the end of 2002.

I am looking forward to the R300 release but I think I'll wait till they come out with the .13m boards.

Considering this is just the initial release of the new cards, and the fact that the R250/Pro are basically going to replace the 7500 to compete with the GF4 MX's, and the R300 is going to compete with the GF4 Ti's, I would expect that they would have to have some price point more attainable to actually sell the cards.

I would think the R300 will debut somewhere around $400 US since other cards being released have been around this as well (the GF4 Ti4600 and the Parhelia both introduced at approx. $400 as well with the initial release cards). The R300 isn't going to be an "All in Wonder" card or anything to that effect, it's going to be the new speed champ for games basically, and have dvd and multi monitor support so I would expect it to be cheaper than when the AIW R300 card eventually comes out. Now I would think that the hardest price to put on a card will be the R250/Pro cards cause these are meant to replace the 7500, but the 8500 is still expected to be faster overall. You can buy a Radeon 8500 now for under $100 so how can they expect to sell a new R250 card for more than that if it doesn't even have the power of the 8500.

If they want to sell cards they will have to reduce the R300 to under $400 and keep the new R250 competitive with its own 8500 to slightly over $100 if they have a 64Meg version and around $150-175 for the 128meg version.

One thing we can problably all bet on is that when the R300 is released, Nvidia might lower the price of their TI line to make people forget about the R300. Seeing the ti4600 dropping down to the $225-250 US range would be sweet!

"Parhelia who?"

😛😀🙂
rub it in will you 😛

Matrox has nothing to worry about! It may not attract the mass appeal of the gaming crowd like it wanted, but it will still do ok in a corporate secter where a high percentage of them would not even look at ATI or Nvidia for a graphic solution. If I had 100 employees and they had to sit in front of their screens for 8-12 hours a day, 5 days a week, I would not consider ATI or Nvidia either. The work computer i'm on right now has Matrox Inside 🙂.

Looking at NVIDIA's corporate/business marketshare, it looks like most businesses side with them.

So in 3 months when i get aorund to upgrading, it'll be under 200 you think? badda$$!!!!

Under 200? Probally not.

I'd say it'll be at... $275 lowest.

Either way, still alot to pay for a videocard.

the same way nvidia manages to sell 4MX cards for more than a GF3

Anyone know if Anand will have reviews of both cards on Wednesday?

*GTa <-- Greetings from Koblenz, Germany.

He probably has them already but is kept from posting anything about the numbers due to NDA. I'm sure we'll have some news from either this site or Tom's Hardware on Wednesday.

Its disappointing to hear in this article that the R300 will be "comparable" to the geforce4 ti4600. I expected it to be a ti4600 killer. Sounds like the 8500 vs GF3 story all over again.

bah rumors. I believe it when i see some real numbers.

Our Business here has about 800 or so computers....
We use about 50% onboard Intel video, 25% NVidia TNT Vanta, 10% ATI, 10% Matrox G200 or G100, 5% other POS cards.
