btw, it is clearly indicated in that story that the rubber band was not "tossed". that is simply the word used, but the action was not tossing. it was shooting. i dont think the kid ought to be expelled, but a 10 day suspension is fine.

10 day suspension for shooting a rubber band? I'd certainly HOPE not.
If the kid doesn't have a history, that warrants a "no shooting rubber bands" from the teacher.
If the kid has a history, but isn't REALLY roudy, that warrants a threat "pick that up and don't shoot it again, or you go to the principal's office"
If the kid's a troublemaker, and is acting up, it warrants a trip to the principal's office, but only a 1-day suspension in the most extreme cases.

Man, what the hell kind of schools did you guys go to? Military academies? If I was suspended for 10 days every time I shot a rubber band, flung wads of paper, or something like that, I would never have graduated. Maybe we should go back and burn all of the old Dennis the Menace footage because *gasp* it shows him holding a sling shot!

10-day suspension would be for beating a kid or bringing a gun to school.
Ummm. I would hope that a school doesn't suspend a kid for only 10 days if he brings a gun to school.
I think many of you are missing the point. There is a CLEAR difference between
-- shooting a rubber band across the room or spitballs at one another like we have all done at some point in our school days
AND
-- shooting a rubber band at your teacher after she told you to put it down. Maintaining classroom disapline is not easy for teachers and this kid got exactly what he deserves if he in fact did shoot the rubber band at his teacher. This issue is more about respect then the actual threat, and the kid clearly has none. If my kid did that then I would walcome the lesson being taught with a 10 day suspension.
EDIT: Oh... and how about an apology from the kid and his mother.
Rarely do I say this, but ROFL. Seriously, that's so utterly fitting; the school claims he had a weapon, and they even admit they provided it.Originally posted by: harrkev
The parents should sue the shcool for providing their child with a dangerous weapon.

Again. I believe the big issue here is the kid's blantant disrespect for his teacher instead of the rubberband being dangerous. The kid should have to apologize and then the school should lessen the suspension. Sounds to me like they called the news before actually talking to the school about the issue.

I used to use staples and rubber cement to make projectiles that would actually stick into objects. Not to mention fashioning mini guns out of pens with springs.

I think every kid that wasn't a robot did that. Anyone remember those pencils that had 10-15 little points stored in them, and when the top one got dull, you stuck it in the back and a new one popped out the front? Those made AWESOME blow-guns with very little modification. And those little points were sharp, too!
Good times.
I think it's a pretty sad state of affairs what things have come down to. We used to have dodgeball, snowball fights, gym class....not anymore. Looks like I got out of grade school just in time. Poor kids.
