"officials" make irrational decisions on things in regards to animals. wow a bear with a jar over its head? sounds like it can't really bite anyone and also I'm pretty sure it was preoccupied with getting that crap off its head that it wasn't going to be messing with any humans. Trigger happy douche bags.

I HAS NO CLAWS?

A bear with a jar on its head? Well it was obviously harmless, since it had a jar!!!!!!! People realize it still has other limbs and was walking through a city, correct?

The logic behind the "they should be brought up on charges....they should be fired...blah blah blah" people astounds me.

Its like the outcry over that stupid cougar in Chicago. IT WAS A COUGAR....IN CHICAGO. You don't try and sway the animal with catfood and hope it doesn't maul a child or anything. You shoot the damn thing and move on. Yet the retarded animal rights psycho's decide that an equal punishment for killing the cougar should be to burn down the mayor's house and endanger human lives. Gotta love it.

I wasn't 100% serious when I implied they should be fired. It was more of an insult to them.

I understand bears can be dangerous. Bullet....tranquilizer.....is one harder aim and shoot than the other?

A tranquilizer is not full proof, a bullet is. What happens if you shoot it with a tranq, it does nothing, and runs off into the city?

edit- and it wasn't aimed at you, more of just my hatred for people who value animal life more than human.

A few people die and I get to read about it in the news and laugh. Win win for me.

If they were going to shoot it why didn't they just shoot the jar and break it open?

Hahha, wouldn't it be hilarious if they were stupid enough to try this and ended up shooting the bear's head through the PLASTIC jar. BOOOM HEADSHOT.

Those officals fail at life. 6 days and they cant figure out how to properly tranq a bear or at least restrain it. then just cut the plastic jar off its head and let it wake up and go back to normal.

Am I going to hell? I have to admit I chuckled a bit at the mental image of a bear walking around with a jar stuck on its head.

As for shooting it - well, after 6 days with a jar stuck on its head...I'm pretty sure it might be pissed off. A pissed off bear in an urban area is not safe.

Foolproof.

I thought bullets can just anger them sometimes as well, if you hit them in the wrong spot. It seems to me they could have found a way to tranquilize him.

It's a bear. So what. Who f'n cares? The sad part is how much money was spent trying to "save" the bear. If humans hadn't noticed the jar on it's head, it would have died anyway.

Of course they shot it. Otherwise the bear would die of starvation. They did the humane thing.

But why couldnt they tranquilize it. As someone else mentioned, if they shot a bullet at it, they sure as hell could have shot a tranquilize at it. Once tranquilized, they could have removed the jar. Six days....

My best guess is that the tranqs hit but were ineffective.

That doesn't happen.

RE: Bullets. Depends on the caliber. Don't try shooting a bear with a 9mm. Shooting it with a 30-06; yep you're in business.

While I may not agree with the way the situation was handled, consider the following. The bear was starved and dehydrated when it came to town. The immediate concern was with the safety of the townspeople. Also, once bears find their way into towns, they generally become pests and will eventually be put down for it.

All of these replies and no ones claimed it was Pook Beah with his head stuck in a honey jar

Oh dear.....

Seriously though. Trapping the bear might have been made harder by the jar being on there. The traps are usually baited with food or scented, so that might not have worked.

As for the poor thing being shot because it wandered into town....well, it probably had no idea where it was. Assuming the plastic jar wasn't clear then the bear likely stayed away from the town if he could see where he was.

Honestly, for those that think this was ok, or that "It's just a dumb bear.".....you're fucking idiots. I'm by no means an animal activist, but I do understand my place in this world and can understand the bear wouldn't be in this position if it weren't for one of us throwing the damn jar out in the first place.

It happened. You can't reverse it. So you deal with it.

If you think a bear is a "poor thing" you are mistaken as mistaken can be. Bears are killers. Plain and simple.

Sad.
Peta should take them to court.
We have bears here, a nearby town has so many that they are pictured on the side of the police cars. They are black bears, not normally the ones to do a lot of damage. Mostly they annoy people with getting into the trash. I think they are funny to watch. Saw one last year that was rolling around in the grass on his back. Not the most threatening site.

Where did I say "this deed should be undone!"....or that they aren't creatures capable of killing in an instant.

I say "poor thing" because it wasn't really his fucking fault in the first place. Not because I think all bears are poor innocent creatures.

It just seemed like a senseless act to begin with.

If you're looking for an internet argument (where all are winnArs) by putting words into my mouth look elsewhere before I stick something in your mouth.

Are you always this sensitive? This is OT. You need to calm down and quit threatening me.

This statement is a reference, which I see I did not make clear, to the jar already being on its head.

You've turned my reply to your post into a personal attack on you - it's not.

In the six days that followed the initial sighting of the bear, officials tried to trap it and tranquilize it in numerous locations, but to no avail.

Now according to the article, the bear got it's head stuck in a jar. Officials tried to capture/tranquilize it numerous times and failed. How do you fail to tranquilize a bear with a jar stuck on it's head....not to mention you have 6 days to get it done. 😕 Officials then decided the best thing to do would be to shoot the bear and kill it.

It had a frickin jar on it's head! Im not sure what officials they're referring to, but those incompetent fools need to be replaced.

Well, yeah. After it wandered into a city during a festival. I'd make the same decision.

Probably people saw it here and there, but it was unable to take normal bait traps and they're not always the easiest animal to track...and there's probably rather limited DOW staff to devote all their energy to it over a wide area. Not to mention Tranqs dosages don't always work.

Still a shame though.

Local news describes it better. The spotter didn't have tranqs on them when they first saw it and had to go get the things, by the time they got back the bear had vanished. They couldn't find it until 6 days later, when it found them.
