Toyota needs to buy GM altogether and destroy the UAW with a hammering vengence.

DOWN WITH GM!!! DOWN WITH GM!!! DOWN WITH GM!!!

You are a fvcking moron, you know that?
Do you have ANY idea how many GM vehicles are on the road today?
If GM collapsed it would leave MILLIONS of people without parts or service available for thier cars. Not to mention putting many thousands of people out of work.
I hope someone drives a Toyota up your ass. :|

Not really.

Parts can still be made, just as they are now.

The dies don't melt down in shame because the company tanks.

Aftermarket suppliers would still be here.

The thing is that some of those companies rely on GM for good portions of thier income.
GM goes under they have much less income, they in turn go under, massive parts shortages ensue.

So someone else buys them and continues making the parts.

It's happened a few times before, you know?

Edit: GM's problem is they have too many brands and they expanded too quickly by acquiring instead of developing better cars. Have you seen their vehicles? They ALL look the same.

I know that's a problem. I've talked about that before.

The unions have a right to bargain for wages and benefits, but they need to see that their employer is having major troubles. They should realize that for the good of the company, and perhaps their future employment, they should be willing to take a little less.

That's a more reasonable characterization. Essentially, they should be operating a bit like airline unions...

Nono, you don't understand him. Once GM is gone, every single supplier will cease operations as well. Millions will lose their jobs, millions will starve; and thus, the US economy plunges into the dark ages!!!

There's no such thing as another company taking over, because CrackRabbit failed 9th grade economics.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! What a motard.

GM's expanded their brands? since when? The only new brand they have added in over twenty years is Saturn. Well, they briefly did Geo but that got consolidated into chevy. Yes, their cars look the same. that started in the '70s if not sooner.

http://www.pommert.de/virtualia/garage/

According to this list...

GM owns a 50% interest in Shanghai motors, they acquired a 20% stake in Subaru in 2000, a 9.9% interest in Suzuki, a 34% interest in a Chinese car company, BOUGHT OUT and liquidated Daewoo Motors, and SAAB in 1989.

Part of the problem is ALL their brands with the exception of a few have a reputation for being discount brands with frequent incentives - they have no brand-name power to command large margins, like Toyota does with Lexus. They're also very recycled models - for example, their SUV lines look ALL the same, and there's very little variance.

Do you know what happens when a company goes bankrupt and another company takes over? Their suppliers and mechanics do not cease to exist, they merely are employed by another company now. Some may lose their jobs, but for the most part, there is no catatrophic disaster where "MILLIONS of people" lose their jobs.

I don't understand how drug companies can get away with retail prices well over $100 per month for many of their maintenance meds (And don't say it's the pharmacies either, as they make VERY little profit on the expensive brand name drugs. All their profits come from Generics and OTC sales)

I agree with that too. I think another problem is all of the malpractice and medical injury lawsuits. Malpractice insurance is the main thing driving up healthcare costs.

Excellent Point. I've heard of Doctors paying upwards of $40,000 per year in my area in just Malpractice insurance ...

Yes but who would take over GM? HMMMM?
We both know that they have massive debt, massive heathcare costs, and an unmanagable union situation.
If you were another auto maker or investment firm would you want to take over that type of liability?
Didn't think so, so what happens if GM completly collapses?
You end up with your core GM employees out of jobs and a ripple effect throughout thier supply chain.
Sure there will be suplliers that can shift thier businesses or have enough business with other makers to keep on going.
But what about the ones that can't or have so much business tied up with GM that they can't shift rapidly enough to make parts for someone else? They collapse also, putting more people out of a job.
Call me a Motard if you want, but the situation would be quite dire if GM collapsed.

Do you know how to read? Please refer to my ORIGINAL post. There is a certain auto company out there with a kick-ass stellar record for knowing HOW TO SELL CARS. So much so that they are thinking about raising prices merely to let GM breathe a little. Hah! Utter humiliation!!

You are talking about a quote from one person, not the companies stance on business.
And as others have said Toyota is too smart to burden themselves with GMs debt and Union troubles.
There is no denying Toyota makes great cars,
but typing
DOWN WITH GM!!!
DOWN WITH GM!!!
DOWN WITH GM!!!
Makes you look like an idiot fanboy.

And I question your reading ability as well, did you not read my last posts scenario?

im sorry, but this thread just shows how immature a lot of people on this forum are. lets just type in caps and yell at the other person.

Parts wise: GM parts wouldnt be hard to find, but they would be much more expensive than they are currently.

Economy wise: the only way any company would ever want to buy out GM is just to put them out of business totally. GM is still stuck in the 70's era in terms of tools they use, their union situation and everything else.

you guys honestly have zero scope of how large GM is for this economy. IF GM goes under, and it is going to take a LOT which GM is currently being chipped away at. Economy will tkae a turn for the worse, hundreds of thousands will flood the market with very little skills, lots of engineers, lots of designers, and MANY ppl used to pay rates well above what they should get paid. The economy will basically be distraught for many years.

just settle your immature fvcking asses down and think a little.

MIKE

The problem with GM is not just with the union. It takes two to tango.

Management mistakes: relied too heavy on the big SUVs and trucks in the last few years. Now gas price is going up, those segments are down ==> no more fat profits. GM has none, ZERO, nada, zip, of anything related to 1/2 gas, 1/2 electric vehicles. Toyota and Honda are eating their lunch rignt now in that market. GM has too many cookie cutter/bland/me too/look alike vehicles across their brands. They need to cut at least one or more brands (the rumor is Buick and Pontiac are on the block).

UAW mistakes: just want to maximize their salaries and benefits and not care about anything else, especially quality and workmanship. Even the President of the UAW had to admit that imports are better in quality overall.

One more thing, GM/Ford/Chrysler are relying too much on rebates/cashback/incentivies to sell their vehicles. It is killing their used cars market and cheapen the brands. Imports are selling just fine, even increase their market shares, without any gimmicks.

Edit: as an American, I hope GM learn their mistakes and turn the ship around. There are a few articles in Fortune and MSN of how GM will survive but smaller and leaner, hopefully, meaner.

you can still buy parts for fvcking Deloreans. something tells me you'll be able to keep a Malibu going for a while, too. not that you'd want to.

Toyota won't but GM, they dont want all the extra baggage that comes with it.
Yes, you can find parts for a DeLorean, Studebaker, Hudson or AMC if you wanted to. The thing is parts generaly are not being made anymore. Once they are no longer made and the suplies start to dwindle the price skyrockets. All of the makers mentioned here with the exception of AMC were fairly small, nothing on the scale of GM anyways. People now expect cars to last at least 10 years and that simply isnt possible without replacement parts being inexpensive and readily available.
I had an AMC for about a year, during the time I had it it needed several repairs. Some parts were fairly easy to find. Others, like an exaust manifold, took weeks and were very expensive.
