OK...the AMD man finally caves and comes knocking at the door of Intel **UPDATE** 2.4GHz/DDR333 so far :)

After 3 years of having nothing but AMD processors, it's time for a chancge.

Alright, after my troubles with the nForce board, I've decided to cut my losses and just splurge for an Intel system. Here are my requirements for a motherboard:

USB 2.0 onboard
NIC onboard
Decent audio
Overclocking options
Price of ~ $100

Can be i845 or SiS645

Any suggestions?? Processor will most likely be a 1.6A. And what about a HSF?

I don't think you'll find what you want for $100. The Asus P4B533-V meets your specs for $170. None of the less expensive models have audio worth considering, unless you can live without USB 2.0 on the P4S533($105). In any event, you're going to want a C-media audio controller if you're going for onboard sound. Fairly good sound, uses Sensaura.

Well, I can live without USB 2.0.

I'll look into the P4S5333...Budman also recommended it.

NO! STOP AND THINK WHAT YOU ARE SAYING! :D :)

I'm still wondering why I don't get more snives and snivels around here, after being accused of being the "biggest AMD zealot". I mean, I'm down to a single AMD rig. And it will be gone very shortly, once my P4B533-V arrives :D :)

Intel is where its at right now. Funny how tides change, eh? :)

Pabster, funny that you have a dual Athlon bragging sig. :D

After AMD gave me a free 1800+, I am sure I'll be sticking with them for a while. :D

yikes!

heh, and I was thinking of sticking with this 800mhz Duron and moving to a KT333 platform (KT133a just isn't as fast, even on a Duron) to wait for the Barton to come..

after that I would have to start thinking about either moving to Intel or going for the Hammer..

There is nothing wrong with a good Athlon/VIA setup. The MSI KT333 Ultra is one of the finest boards out and it's less than $80. As NFS4 pointed out, the ony reason he ditched his setup was to get more PCI slots.

A dual AMD system is very fast, and rock solid - Makes a world of difference when you use a board with an AMD chipset. They are not, however, good gaming systems.

That having been said, I'm becoming more & more tempted to sell my dualie 1800 system & build a high-end P4 system. The Tiger MP is not without it's faults, & the dual 1800's pump out a lot of heat. The last few days more heat is the last thing we've needed here.

Plus I could actually use the latest Detonator drivers!

What a concept.

I hear the Epox board is pretty good for overclocking.

The MSI 845 Ultra ARU comes with RAID and USB 2.0, as well as a crap load of USB 1.1 ports and is about $100. I wouldn't recommend it though - it doesn't overclock well and doesn't have a memory ratio to get more speed out of the memory.

sorry you couldnt get your abit going. mine is rock solid but it would drive me crazy too to have to keep hacking at it.
i would reccomend the asus p4s533 (i've got the p4s333) it's rock solid at the easy 1.6a overclock to 2.13. i've been running prime95 24/7 for 2 months now.
not usb2.0 but still a grat board. also, the stock hsf is pretty good and all i'm using.
good luck

Absolutely. I never had any qualms with my dual AMD rigs. Tyan S2460 and S2462 are rock solid, as is the AMD core logic. However, I was fed up with the massive amount of cooling and noise, and a few glaring deficiencies -- gaming, most certainly, is not a strong point with these platforms. But they weren't designed for gaming.

Hmmm. it'll be tough for you to get that. I think your best bet will be MSi's 845G MAX-L. I can't think of any other board that cheap, and nothing will match nForce's APU. There's a review of it here. I does have USB2 and ocing although weak sound. To be honest, I would really take an 845G over a 645. The reality is that the P4's are limited greatly unless they use PC1066+850e or DDR333 with 845G or P4X333 (the difference is as big as 15%), and thats why I say don't get the P4S533. Sorry you haven't had any luck whatsoever with the NV7-133R. I really dunno why. I think that this is simply the evidence I need to consider the NV7-133R not the best board. I've talked with another person who I reccomened it to and he hasn't had the trouble you've had, but he has had an issue with it. So anyway.

Would I be crazy to go for a P4X333 motherboard? I don't have any qualms with VIA boards, it's just that I've dealt with them only on AMD systems, not Intel systems.

Anyway, the MSI 845G MAX-L does look very nice. I think I'll pick up that one.

not sayin anything, just want to know how an amd system is not good for gaming?? seems to me that if you have an athlon or a p4 at at least 1.2ghz then you are not going to notice too terribly the difference..given they both have decent video cards

He means dual Athlons and the boards needed to run them are more of a business/MM focused product. Single Athlons are great for gaming. Duals aren't bad, but they won't help too much for games.

If a top-tier maker produced one...maybe. But I don't trust Epox or Shuttle to lead the charge.

Make do with the 600 MHz Athlon that I'm typing on right now? I don't think so. I don't HAVE anything else.

I could wait for hammer, and then what? Use it for non-existent 64-bit apps??
