I just had a surgery and I'm stuck in the house for a while, so I've been watching a bit of TV. Quite frankly these OSX commercials are making me a LITTLE angry and annoyed. They feature a scraggly white preepy looking female/male staight up saying Mac?s are better than PC?s just because??., they mention NO BENEFITS WHATSOEVER. In a fit of anger I switched to that Tech TV channel in hopes of finding some support for the PC, and what do I find? A retired Tight End out of the NFL being interviewed about Mac?s :Q. These are some of his words:

?The Mac is so much better than a PC, it allows people to get work done, I feel sorry for people who are currently using a PC?

WTF??? People who use Mac?s are acting like the PC is the damn devil!! Someone please alert me to these ?magnificent? differences so I don?t think everyone using Mac?s have a fat stick up their a**!!

Search a little bit, there have been a few OS X threads recently.

Frankly OS X kicks XP's ass all over the place.

osx is great, it is easy to use for people who arent computer savvy, and it has the power of unix. i can open up a shell window and be right at home. if you're a windows user i guess that doesnt matter much to you though.

go to an apple store and use it. i would personally never ditch my windows box completely at this point, but for people who think Mac OS is still stuck in the stone age, that is just ignorant. i know that isnt an option for you right now, unfortunately, since youre stuck in bed. while i dont think apple's marketing strategy takes into account learned computer users, i think its brilliant because most people out there arent learned computer users. theres no need to get mad just because apple claims their product is better than windows. maybe they have a reason theyre saying this.

Heck, what company doesnt say their product is the best?

thats true, but maybe apple is validated when they say it. you dont take it on face value. you try it out yourself if you can. i mean, what pain killer is the best? tylenol? advil? you gotta be able to test the claims companies make.

The platform is useless to any serious computer user; limited hardware, limited software and no development.

Does someone have to bring up Apple's evilness of using proprietary hardware like PCI, USB, firewire and ATA; proprietary software environment by implementing a full FreeBSD userspace so nearly all unix/linux apps run on it and ignoring developers by using little used tools like gcc.

Frankly, if you think a new Mac running OS X is useless you're an idiot.

Sorry, I stopped debating on these forums.

Nothinman, can you put a non-Apple mainboard into a Mac computer? Nope didn't think so. Can you buy a Mac from any company other than Apple? Nope again.

I don't think Macs running MacOS X are bad or worthless. I just think they're not one bit better than a PC running Win2K or WinXP in any area, so why support an Apple-dominated platform? If you like running FreeBSD, get a PC and put FreeBSD on it.

there used to be apple clones but they just didnt make it. apple is unique for selling the hardware and software in the personal computer market. if you look at palm, theyre the same thing. theyre hardware attached to the software as well. just because the OS and the hardware are both tied with apple doesnt mean its a bad thing, does it?

Can you put a non-Compaq mainboard into a Compaq? No, same with Dell, Packard Bell and many other PC distributers. Infact after seeing the inside of a G4 tower it would probably be eaiser to get a ATX board into there than getting one inside a Compaq DeskPro.

I just think they're not one bit better than a PC running Win2K or WinXP in any area, so why support an Apple-dominated platform?

Because Apple hardware and software has a ton of QA behind it. Their claims of plugging it in and it just working are 99% true.

What bugs me is not when people say Mac is better or whatever--but when people come up to me and tell me I should personally switch over to it. I've met some overzealous people who've told me "you should switch to a Mac because..." and start naming off all these reasons (like they're cheaper, programs are better, you can do more with it, etc.) when I know for a fact what each platform can and cannot do having used both platforms. I've always been a PC person, and there are several programs (say Oracle for example) that I can run on a PC but won't work on a Mac. My PC hardware has also cost a lot less than the Mac equivalent, and I like the Windows UI a lot better than MacOS. I think which system you use is a matter of personal preference, and what works for one person is not necessarily the best choice for another.

theyre the same cards for the most part. i dont understand this argument. if you like windows UI better thats a good reason to stick with it over Mac OS though.

I have to take the sides of the PC people on the hardware issue. For two reasons, the price and the proprietary nature. I have to fix alot of Apple products, and when the warranty goes out, you are screwed. I see ALOT of problems with the iMacs (not so many with the G4's). CD-Rom's, logic boards, AV boards, etc, etc failing, and then school's having to pay through the nose to replace them.
Also, since Apple markets it's lack of conformity, ie changing the look and feel of their machines regularly, they more often than not have technical difficulties and sometimes have to recall certain products. You can't just expect to reshape a case, and expect the old hardware to fit. You have to rework your boards. This in itself is not a problem, the problem arises in that Apple doesn't give itself time to iron out the quirks, hell with their marketing techniques they will never have the time ( unless they can figure out how to make a computer that fits in a TINY cube so that whenever they rework the look, it doesn't effect the computer).
These problems are not Apple-centric, however. There are many of PC distributers that also do the same thing. They to have proprietary products, and expensive prices. I don't think I'll ever buy a brand name desktop. I have more faith in building them myself.

Now the reverse is true for laptops. I would never attempt to build my own, and I find that Apple makes by far the best laptops. Funny that!

FOBSIDE, it's not the case that the Apple clones didn't make it. They were doing very well. Too well for Apple's tastes. Apple didn't like the fact the some of the Mac clone companies were building better quality Macs and for less than Apple, so Apple killed off the clone licensing program.

Yes, having both the hardware and OS software tied to one company is a bad thing, IMO.

uh... the winXP ads are flying people IIRC. the OSX ads say they have the power of unix. which is more informative?

And OSX is a very very nice OS - if it ran on x86 and had games / my specific apps (not equivalent ones - just habit/comfort 😉) I would drop XP in an instant. I'd drop linux, too.

I tried OS X on one of the new iMac's the last time I visited my local Apple Store. I found the performance to be sluggish, and all of the silly animations for opening/closing windows and launching programs to be quite annoying.

I'd imagine that it runs better with all that junk turned off, but I still wasn't impressed. Even my old Athlon 700 with Windows 98 could outrun that sluggish system.

Macs are cheaper than PCs.

I bought an iBook. I then purchased Mac OS X. I didnt have to worry about going out and getting drivers for any of my hardware. That is the great thing about the hardware and software being developed together.

The reason the Mac clones stopped was because Apple was losing money. Plus the clones were cheap knock offs. The driver support was lacking. Much like in the PC world, Apple had to support a lot of different hardware and it was too much of a strain, so some of the drivers sucked, which made it look like Mac OS was instable.

You dont like Apple? Great. Go away.

Windows XP is FREAKIN' AWESOME! However, OSX is VERY sweet too. I really like them both. As to which is better, that can be decided on what you want to do. For gaming, a high end Mac will get slapped around by a high end PC. For Photoshop, well, that's the Mac's department. But if I had to choose, I'll take my PC WITH XP in a heart beat. 😉

Id maybe buy a Mac if they shipped theyre damn computers with two button mice! Yeah yeah, I know you can put a two button mouse on a Mac but I dont want to have to buy one separatly...Its un-American!

I'd much rather look at flying people than watch an anorexic model* tell me something is way better than something else when he knows nothing about either of the 2 while stating no specific advantages. The least they could do is have Steve Jobs stating some facts. Windows dose not need such publicity because it sells like hot cakes and almost every PC uses it. What more advertisement could you need? All I used in high school were iMac's or those G3/G4 Towers. They didn't work half the time, and the iMac's had hardware issues constantly, some of them froze quite often to. I can't count the number of times I walked into a computer lab and saw a print out with a fat arrow pointing me to the next computer. You can't tell me the kid?s screwed up the computer either because of the security restrictions flat out limiting you to typing and saving word files on the main server for that particular lab, and research on the Internet. IMO OSX did not seem user friendly at all when compared to the PC. But since I?m so at home with Windows I can?t say it?s not user friendly. What I?m gathering from all your posts is that OSX is for the people who are complete morons with a computer. I remember a multi media lab with some video editing software that seemed EXTREMELY simple. But is it really that hard to read a manual on how to Install such software on a PC? You would think some people wanting to use a computer as a great tool and hub of communication would take the little time they would need out and learn how to use it. People are just to damn impatient these day?s, and that?s the only reason they run in to problems and get pissy when it comes to windows. If someone can?t handle Windows XP I don?t think they should be using a computer.

i can open up a shell window and be right at home

What is a shell btw?
