You'll need to use manual focus and probably at that range adjust your camera to the subject (set the focus and move the camera forward/back)

He doesn't have quite the best camera for that type of thing.
 
it looks ok but maybe im just spoiled by the quality of a 5D. most pictures look like sh!t now compared to ones from a 5D.

Probably.

I'm pretty noob at photography and getting macros focused very well can be tough to say the least. I just set the focus and then move the camera back and forth. But hopefully if he sets the focus he can then learn. yet another reason why I want a DLSR - I've outgrown my very capable camera, but it just can't do what I want

A tripod would also help a ton.
