ok so now I have to buy a new cpu

ok so the 1.6A is dead and in the process of the diagnosis I bought a new mobo that supports faster cpus and 800mhz FSB.

BUT my old memory is one stick, 512Mb, of 2700 mushkin.

If I go for the P4, is the 800mhz FSB possible or am I stuck in 533FSB land? Does it matter in the performance realm? Games specifically?

does your motherboard have some kind of error codes that you can use to determin for sure that your CPU is dead? The manual should list beep codes or mabe there are LEDs on the board to indicate an error code.

I'm in the same boat. I got 3 bad sis 655 boards from msi in a row, so they finally sent me a brand new 865pe neo LS. I'm able to run my 2.4b at 160 (2.88) at 1.47 volts without any problems. Just set the memory to auto or spd.

You can just use a 5:4 or 3:2 ratio on an 865/875 board.

200 MHz FSB:
5:4 = ~ PC2700
3:2 = ~ PC2100

250 MHz FSB:
5:4 = ~ PC3200
3:2 = ~ PC2700

So, even with an overclock to 250 MHz FSB, your PC2700 will still work,

Dont get a 533 FSB processor. Not worth it. Just OC you memory or if ya dont want to OC then youll have to run it out of sync. The difference between 800 and 533 too much to go for a 533.

It should work fine, but a little slower. I would try selling it, and replace it with 2 sticks of pc3200. You don't need a matched set, just the same brand. I use 2 sticks of generic pc3500, and it runs fine at 415 with a 2.4b (166 fsb 2980)
