Ok so just how much faster is the i7 over a quad?

For the money, which is a better buy right now? How much faster is the i7 than like a 400-500 dollar quad core?

Is it because of the other components you have to match it with? The more expensive ram and motherboard?

I already have a semi-customized Coolermaster ATCS 840 ordered from performance-pcs and I want a kickass machine enough that the budget isn't a huge concern, but at the same time, if I can spend a considerable amount less by buying a quad core system and really decking it out, I'd do that.

I'm buying the parts that don't chance in price or get upgraded often this month...case, power supply, fans, keyboard, mouse, monitor, hard drives...then picking up mobo, graphics cards, memory and processor next month.

I'm going to be picking up another 24 inch monitor to go with the one I already have, since I do so much multi-tasking.

Anyone in the same boat, on the fence on whether to go with the i7 or quad-core now or wait a bit to see what else comes out deal-wise?

OMG... All you ask and talk about is "hardware".
What "software" do you plan on running on that pile of hardware.
You do plan on using software, don't you?

Something you might be able to relate to...
If you're looking for a new vehicle to haul scrap iron, the best one for the job wouldn't be a Ferrari P4-5 Pininfarina.
Get the picture?

Pretty much. There's rarely enough benefit to justify the price premium for top of the line hardware. I expect my OC'ed E4500 will be a capable gaming CPU for a couple years still.

Running outlook, ie explorer and firefox on one monitor, with a few basic applications in the background (bookmarking demon, etc) .

Main screen will mostly be running IE and firefox. Photoshop CS3, and other adobe products. Games will be run. So far I'm sticking with BF2, but I'd like to play the newest games at their highest resolution possible, in case one catches my eye.

Thinking that one top of the line card like a 280 and another mid-card for the second monitor like the 260 might work. Would it?

This will not work. You can run two of the same card in SLI / Crossfire and get increased performance, or you can run a single card. Just about any video card you buy these days has two outputs, so you don't need two video cards to run two monitors.

You seem to be a prime candidate for a fast dual core. Either that or get a fast Core 2 Quad. For your usages, an i7 is a huge waste of money.

There are hardly any bragging rights with a fast socket 775 processor... 😛

I agree, you'll be wasting your money on i7 right now.

Also, I'd echo Blain's point. A single video card will run two monitors doing 2D work just fine. If you do decide for whatever reason to go with two video cards, the second one doesn't need to cost you more than $50 if it's just driving a secondary 2D display.

You can brag that you didn't rip yourself off buying an i7, and with solid overclocking you might be able to brag about your performance numbers over i7 too, since its not much of a step up from the old stuff.

He can run it as an extra Card, monitor, it just will not be MultiGPU in 3D mode

Bragging about being cheap doesn't get you any props. 😛
Only spending lots of cash will get you the respect you deserve, these days.

I've got a little one on the way. I've also got less time to play games and stuff, aside from the occasional video editing, most of the stuff I do is pretty basic. Sure, my epenis has shrunk from a cool 10 inches to an average size of 5 inches but thems the breaks.

All the more reason to build a bleeding edge PC.

Wow, this is what, the 7156th rehash of how much faster is an i7 than a Qxxxx? Not to be rude OP, but this topic has been beaten to death. Try searching a little maybe 😉
