Help me out here guys :)

This is the rig ill be purchasing within this/next week:
x2 3800+
ultra d dfi mobo
2 gigs of ram
80 gig raptor + 2X250gb hitachi T7K250
everything will be OCed etc etc

What to do now... I could :
1. get the 800gto2 ($200) and unlock it... then sell it and buy a new card in a year
2. get a 7800GT ($330ish) overclock it to GTX speeds and buy a new card in about 1.5-2 years
3. get one of the new ati cards (then id have to wait another couple weeks on my rig i guess) for like ($500ish) and not upgrade for a minimum of 2 years

any suggestions?

thanks

ugh i wish this was more clear cut :(

edit: 7800GTX is also an option if it's worth the money?

If you have the money, I would get a 7800GT. If not, get the x800 GTO2 and unlock it. Really, either way you should be happy.

well, i mean i have the money for even a GTX but is the GT worth the 130 dollar difference from the GTO2 unlocked?

do you have a crappy vid card you can use while you wait for the price wars to go on for the gtx vs the x1800?

if so, do that. use crap card while u overclock everything else to wait it out. overclocking takes a lot of time and during this time u can wait for prices to drop even more.

at this point i dont think its worth gettin a gt cuz even if u overclock it to gtx speeds, its still not as good as a stock gtx

you can get a used gtx made by a manufacturer that has lifetime warranty, so it being used wont be too big an issue

if anything, buy the gto now because i think thats easily the best bang of the buck at the moment then upgrade to the current top tier in a few months when prices have dropped more significantly.

how much are u going to game on this card? what monitor? if you dont have anything higher than 1600x1200...then the gto unlocked should be more than enough for the moment. if your monitor will go beyond that resolution...a used gtx with lifetime warranty is more worth it IMO than a new gt

I'd get the gto2 now while you still can.. They seem to be in high demand and there's only one manufacturer that makes them. They're a steal at $200, and the only reason I haven't gotten a few already is I'm still using AGP :)

And any of the cards you mentioned will last a good 3 years unless you need to be on top of the gaming food chain :)

3 yrs???? thats a bit conservative at the rate games are going these days

my friend's x850 xt pe cant handle aoe3 at a high res and i only avg 43-48fps in it at 1600x1200 with my gtx

its still a demo tho...but its a sign games are gettin more demanding quicker than ever

We really need to know the res you need to play at. If its 1600x1200 or above I would go with the 7800 series ox X1800's. If its below that simple, just got get the GTO2.

I second the suggestion of waiting for price wars. By the holidays, GTX prices should be around $400, I'm guessing.

yeah, gettin the gto then selling it for 150 (u lose 50ish) for a month or two isnt bad at all, considering you can use that towards the upgrade it if isnt enough umph for u

GTO. Skip this generation and wait for the directx 10 generation.

IMO, GTX is not worth the money unless you are a high-end gamer (1600x1200 w/ 4xAA, etc.). JBT asks a good question, what resolution are you going to play at?

Ok, i just woke up from my afternoon nap =P ... thanks for all the input... yes i am sure i want to OC it.... OCing rarely "breaks" anything :) ... i don't mind if my proc dies in 5 years.... i don't plan to use it for that long anyway.

As for the GTO2 .... I'm already spending like 1600 without the vid card on my comp, so i want to be able to play games at pretty high settings with it. Do you guys think the GTO2 will limit me a lot? Around when do you think the DX10 cards will come? 6 months? 1 yr? 2 yrs? I haven't researched that yet.

Basically i'm asking.... will i be able to turn on AA and all the other fancy shmancy stuff and put the res to at least 1280X1024 and still have playable framerates (above 35) in pretty much every game within the next (insert answer to the timing of the DX10 cards).

edit: i also noticed that the new NV drivers utilize a second processor, so if ATI won't do this i think I will go with the GT for sure as opposed to the GTO2

wow....so naive (or worse)

1. "get one of the new ATI carts" ??? you must mean the X1800XT, not the X1800XL which doesn't even compare favorably to 7800GT, can't be overclocked (because of hardware bug), and costs more.

2. "wait another couple of weeks" ??? really, you are hopelessly optimistic. ati said availability will be in a month (that 4.5 weeks) and that's probably means it will hardly be available in large quantity before x-mas.

3. "for like $500" - MSRP is $550 but due to projected low availalbity it wll sell for WAY above MSRP for at least a few months.

So you should change your statement to
"maybe I should get the X1800XT but I'll have to wait until x-mas and pay over $600 for it" . Smart. Really smart

Ok... first of all... don't respond to threads if you're gonna be an a$$hole... second of all by a couple weeks i meant the XL... which might overclock quite well with the new chipset... i'm sure the bug will be fixed.

btw.... notice how you didn't answer the question at all.... i really don't want your input. thanks anyway

you, are obviously an nvidia fanboy since i see you own a gtx in ur sig, or just a rude fvck

even if you are not a fanboy, you need to get your smartass tone out of your "helpful" advice
