Ok, so I'm thinking about doing a double major....

But my two choices are graphic design and physics. It just doesn't make sense, but I think I would enjoy it. I'm already a sophmore, but I've switched my majors last year from CS to graphic design and I haven't really got any of the graphic design classes down. I have most of my bs classes like History, humanities, ect. out of the way, but it will be a fresh start on either of these. Has anyone ever done something similar, getting a double major in two completely unrelated things?

I know that I'm going to be in college longer than 4 years, that doesn't bother me. Do you think that this will be a good investment in time and money (have basically a free ride for 3 more years as well because of scholorships). I know the two are completely unrelated, but I'm thinking of doing the physics just for the hell of doing the physics. I love drawing and doing graphic work, it is very relaxing to me. If I didn't take the classes I would be doing it anyways, so if I take the physics (which I also love, but it sure as hell isn't relaxing) classes, I can consider the graphic design to be my fun bs classes since I already got most of those out of the way. I'm going to schedule a meeting with someone up at the college to see what I should do, but I'm interested in your opinions.

I say don't pay for something you won't enjoy or regret for the rest of your life. If you think you will be happy with two different majors, then by all means, for it. No need to angonize for 4+ years of your life with something you don't enjoy and find satisfying.

I have two majors and will be changing them soon because I am not enjoying it. My majors coincide with one another, but I'm not happy with them, hence the change.

Good luck with all of your studies.

Why don't you major in one subject and minor in another? You would be able to do better with one major. As far as education goes, I never considered any of it wasted, even if I never made one cent at it. The purpose of education is to enlarge your world. That you make a living is necessary, but ought not to be the driving force behind it.

That's what I'm thinking. I enjoy both, but for different reasons. Like I said, drawing is perhaps my favorite thing to do. I can become so wrapped up in pictures that literally hours will fly by and I won't realize it. The only physics class I have taken was in HS, but I was the top of my class in it and I've done a little extra studying on my own (mainly reading astronomy, or theoreticall stuff like string theory). I am almost positive I want to have a graphic design centered career, this is the reason I switched from CS. Physics is just something that I think I would like to learn, and I think 20 years down the road I will thank myself just because I will know physics (even though it probably won't bring me a single dime).

I'm not in any big hurry to get out of college, and money really isn't much of an issue because like I said I have another 3 years of full paid scholorships. The tuition isn't very high at my school, so I could pay it off by having a part time job (and maybe a little help from my parents). Depending on how long it takes to go from a minor to a major, I may just go the extra year if I feel like it.

Go for it. I highly respect anyone who can do a physics major (even more if they're polite enough not to refer to English and such as bs classes).

How much longer are you going to be in school to double? If it's more than 1 semester, don't do it and get your Master's.

This is the course I suggest as well (if your college/university allows a Physics minor).
Concentrate on what you like more and take the Physics courses sparingly that way you'll spend more time on the field you like more and sooner in a
few years you'll have solid base of Physics classes should you decide on switching.

BTW, I know you have the attitude of brushing off GE reqs, but use those requirements to expand on your interests in field you enjoy. You seem to like pictures so why not take a Art History course or History of Scientific intellectual thought. Something of the sort. I should think it wouldn't be too bad.

English is my worst subject, but it certainly not a bs class. Anyone who can get an A in English has my respect. :)
<---- Sucks horribly at writing. :(

I have to take 2 Art history classes, and I've already had 2 Psychology classes and 2 History classes. I don't think of them as a waste of time, I don't care much for psychology but at least I've taken the class and can better see their point of view. I never did think of psychology as being very respectable, but after sifting through many, many journals I have gained a new respect for it. I think these types of classes are just as important as any class on thermodynamics or color theory.

If you love Physics that much, then I think you should go for it. But this is my personal take on the entire thing. If you major in something, you're no longer getting a general taste of it, you'll be going in great depth of the subject, at some point, your curiousity (since that's what it is right now) will be overwhelmed. So rather than go all out in majoring it, minor first, so you will take the classes that seem interesting to you without being forced to take all the other classes that may not be interesting. If a minor doesn't satisfy you, go for the major.

Go for it. I'm a bio and history double major, graduating in 4years so it's doable. I'm only getting a BA though since my college doesn't offer BS.
