I moved here in August and was pleasantly surprised how clear the sky was south of LA. It was as clear as anywhere. Well over the last week its been getting smoggy. Why were the skies so clear during August and September but are smoggy now?

hmm i dunno... im coming out there next weekend with my GF to visit her friend who lives there...

you better get rid of all that smog before i arrive.

...seriously

We're having bad Santa Ana conditions right now which are adding fuel to that big fire burning east of L.A. near Cabazon. Hot, dry winds breezing through the canyons and passes also tend to keep the smog that would in large part normally drift north & east of here trapped in the basin, contributing to the visible smog (particulate matter) you might be seeing. Certainly the ash & smoke from the fire may be a contributing factor today, too.
