man, the wife has really been pushing the issue. she really really wants a Toyota Sienna, recently we bought the Kia Sedona and it has been great, but all her friends are driving the Sienna so she wants one too.

my current car is a '98 Olds Intrigue with 170k miles on it and it is starting to show some wear and tear.

so basically looks like i'm going to be driving the Sedona and she'll get the Sienna.

now, the only question is, should i get her an '06 Sienna or wait for the '07's? the only real difference? the '06 has a 3.3 liter engine that puts out 215 HP, the '07 has a 3.5 liter that pumps out 268 hp.

oh ya, also is it worth the loss in gas mileage to get all wheel drive? frankly we don't get that much snow in the Philly area and FWD handles snow pretty well as long as you stay on the streets.

edit

oh ya, forgot to add, since i'll have a Kia and Toyota once i buy the sienna, this will be the first time ever (since my first car, Ford Pinto in 1981) that i haven't owned an American car.

The Sienna is probably in the top two minivans, the other being the Honda Odyssey. But you're gonna have two vans? That's messed up. If she wants it that bad, make her trade the Sedona for it and you get another sedan. That's what I'd do.

Buying a brand new minivan to keep up with the Joneses.

Sorry, I'm not old enough or suburban enough to care about minivans.

frankly, with the work that i do, having a minivan isn't that bad a deal. what i am going to do however, is put the sedona in the company name and next fall, buy myself a personal car, something fun, mb a mini cooper or something like that. ;)

Instead of looking at brand names, please try to look at each vehicle individually. Both brands make good vehicles and it is unfair to judge Honda because of a bad experience. I am just saying that you should consider the Odyssey as well before spending a large amount of money on a minivan. The more options, the better.

Also, who really cares if others drive a particular minivan? Why be like them? Why not be different? :)

I just want you to make the better choice and not just buy something because someone else has it. Test drive a couple of vehicles first. Sometimes I have gone in deciding I like one car over another and then after test driving them, I change my mind.

By the way, the Odyssey has a great reliability record, just like the Sienna.

i'm 41 with 3 kids, believe me when i say, there is no vehicle better for hauling around a family of 5 than a minivan, and no it is not about seating capacity.

She wants that particular minivan because all her friends drive it and you're giving it to that? Are you guys 10 years old?

No, I'm kidding, you are older than I am and have done more in your life than I have, I'm just saying...that seems kind of weird and childish.

it's an asian think. you americans think you know what keeping up with the joneses is, you don't have a clue compared to the group think mentality of koreans. sometimes i think korean culture is all about raising lemmings instead of people.

but if it does, check it out, it's yahoo's comparison of vehicles. in it, the kia does compare favorably too the honda and toyota, but what threw me was the reviews for the honda.

Try Edmunds.com also. They have a large database of user reviews. They also recently did a comparison of the major minivans.

http://autos.yahoo.com/newcars/comparis...carid0=20333&carid1=18804&carid2=18255

added the '06 honda which had more reviews, still lower reviews overall than the sienna or the sedona.

Ahh that explains it. No wonder she wants a Japanese vehicle.

Yes... but you have one already. Do you really want two minivans? Ugh.

I agree with what someone said above, if she wants it so bad, make her trade the Kia in on it and you can get something else. It does seem silly to me to get something just because "all of your friends have it" - I mean, that's kind of a grade school mentality, dont you think? Especially when you already own something with very similar capabilities - but to each their own, I guess.

FWIW, my mom has an '05 Odyssey and loves it. Had a '96 Chrysler Town & Country before that, and liked that too - although it didn't have all the bells and whistles the Ody does (nav, DVD, XM, etc).

Well being Asian myself, all I can say is that I feel sorry for you especially since this screams "unfaithful wife" to me for some reason. Not to turn things political but what you should do is overstep yourself and get a Mercedes of some sort. I don't care which Asian nationality you are, all Asians worship Mercedes. May I suggest a ML350? They can be had for ~$50k decently equipped.

actually, that was my decision to keep the Kia and get her another minivan. do you have ANY IDEA how much i will get killed on resale trading in the kia? we've only had it 8 months and already have 17k miles on it.

no it just makes a LOT more sense to keep it as a company vehicle (it is my own company), buy her a new one and then buy myself a sporty type vehicle next fall, mb a ford mustang or a mini cooper, that discussion is for another thread tho. ;)

let me explain it again, i've been looking to get myself a new vehicle for a couple of months now, i was looking at ford freestyles and such. i need a vehicle i can carry a ladder, 3 large toolboxes, computer parts and supplies and frequently servers/pc's in large boxes.

a minivan is very practical for me that way.

i'll have her test drive both the honda and toyota and we'll buy the one she prefers.
