OK, so i'm going to break down and buy a japanese car.

Looks like the '06's have a $1500 rebate on them. That should help with the bargain power.

I don't know if I'd pass up an extra 40+ ponies for the savings though. Our 3.3L AWD Highlander is kind of anemic at times. I would have paid more at the time of purchase if a larger engine was available.

Don't know what to tell you about AWD. It's nice to have when you need it. But if you only need it 3x a year for a day or two at a time I don't know if it's worth the extra couple grand, lower fuel economy, and additional parts to break.

But I'm certainly no saint when it comes to that. I've got a 4x4 truck and my wife has a 4WD SUV. But you never know what you'll get in the midwest. You could have 4 months of solid snowfall. You could have 4 days the entire winter.

Err let me get this straight. Your wife wants a different MINI VAN because everyone else has a different kind? That is freaking stupid. :p First will be the mini van and then the house will be too small....

ya, if i lived in Michigan or chigaco area, i'd definitely get her AWD.

interestingly enough, one of the reasons my wife got on this Sienna kick was because our best friends at church just traded in their Highlander for the Sienna. what doesn't make any sense however, is that they traded in the Highlander because it had too many problems, they had it in the shop 6 times over 3 months.

we were going to buy a new car regardless. the only quesiton is, will it be a new minivan or a new something else (i was leaning strongly toward the Ford Freestyle).

You could definitely get a Freestyle for a lot less than a Sienna.

There is no practical reason to get the Sienna, so keep the Kia and get your Freestyle and convince her that this is right. It's always good to have one domestic in the household. :p

read one of my posts above, a sedan won't do it for me, i need to be able to carry ladders, PC's, Servers, Various PC Parts, 2 toolboxes full of stuff.

i setup small networks for doctors offices, windows 2003 servers, 5 to 10 client PC's, i run all the lines, i am also starting to do phone systems for them.

it's a great gig but it requires that i'm prepared for just about anything, can't do that with my Intrigue anymore, hence, i was thinking along the lines of the ford freestyle.

now i'm sold on the minivan idea.

ya, i would prefer to keep a domestic and she is set on getting the Sienna or mb odyssey.

her opinion has to count for something, frankly she has always wanted a toyota or honda, but i talked her into a ford windstar (wow, i got it for like $9k off window) but it wasn't such a great vehicle.

this time it's her turn.

It's nice that you actually listen to people's opinions and reply to them accordingly, unlike most ATers who post a thread making it SEEM like they want opinions, but in reality they just shoot down everything and get mad when people disagree with them.

Anyway, I think you'd be happier with something like a Freestyle than a bulky minivan, because it'll do the job for you and be a nicer "sportier" vehicle, but since you already have the Kia I guess making it yours is the best choice.

Still, if you can get a good deal, you can always trade in that Kia for the Freestyle.

that's a good thought. the kia is getting progressively better reviews, resale value on it should be ok by the end of next year or so. resale value is more about reputation of the vehicle than anything else (of course mileage always hurts resale value, but i mean given certain mileage, the better reputation a vehicle has the better it's resale value will be).

actually, timing might not be bad, i would love to get the new ford edge. but i don't want to get the first model year edge, so next fall when the edge is in its second year, mb i'll trade the kia in for the edge.

If she's going to be driving it, get her whatever she wants. Both are good cars, so that's not a problem. Test drive both, see what kind of deals you can get, and then chose one. As for AWD, it is nice to have atleast 1 AWD car/truck in the family for when you do need it. It might not be a bad idea to pick up. I live in the Allentown area (when I'm not at school), and I know AWD is nice on a few occasions in the winter (but definitely not 100% necessary). Defiintely nice to have, but probably not needed, that van should be fine in the winter with FWD... Now my FWD eclipse in the snow... yeah... that's fun haha...

Buying a brand new minivan to keep up with the Joneses.

Sorry, I'm not old enough or suburban enough to care about minivans.

i'm 41 with 3 kids, believe me when i say, there is no vehicle better for hauling around a family of 5 than a minivan, and no it is not about seating capacity.

Agreed. Nothing safer either.

I only have 1 kid and sometimes I wish we had a minivan.

My sister was out visiting last year and she and her husband rented a Toyota Sienna. It's a great minivan, we put seven of us in it a couple times and it handled that with no trouble. It's not the best looking minivan but it is very functional and very reliable. Comfortable too.

i've never liked honda's frankly (my dad owned a few back in the day and they weren't that great).

toyota's consistently have the best quality of japanese makes.

the odessey is pretty much universally considered to be the best minivan ever built.

now, i guess if you are used to american cars (poorly damped suspensions, poor steering feel, squishy brakes, gasping engines), then you might find toyotas more familiar. and familiar can be good, sometimes, i guess. but personally i'd rather own the better vehicle.

Please note that on the day, or the following day, that you recieve a Sedona so your wife can drive Sienna, your man card is due at the front desk of the manhood office. Having two minivans in the family is reason enough to revoke the man card, but recieving your wife's Kia Sedona so she can be like the cool soccer moms requires urgent action. You should have signed up for the mandatory review as soon as you bought the Kia, but I somehow doubt you did.

unlike some, i don't have to worry about man cards and such. i'm secure enough in my manhood that i don't need those trappings to tell me who and what i am.

good luck to you tho.

go thru the thread and find the link i put up from yahoo and what owners of the odyssey said about it. odyssey didn't get as good reviews as the sienna did.

so, should i just take you opinion? or should i look at the opinions of a bunch of other people that bought the product?

the Kia Sedona we currently own is actually a pretty nice vehicle.

hmm.

lemons i've had? the Ford Windstar, wasn't a great vehicle but i wouldn't say it was a lemon.

then i've owned a a few other vehicles that were so so, including an '80 Nissan Maxima. ehhh at best.

not really considering an SUV.

again, i posted it elsewhere in this thread, but next fall, i'll probably buy myself a personal vehicle that is not a minivan. BUT BECAUSE i will have the minivan as my daily driver, i will have no limits (other than funds of course, will try to keep it less than 35k) for the type of vehicle i will buy.

if there are any to be found, i would love to get a Pontiac GTO and if that's not available probably a Mustang GT.
