You said that you will be making payments so you'll have to pay for full coverage anyhow...I can't see a big difference between new and used.
There is a big thread on Fatwallet about getting a brand new Sentra for under $10K.
Don't know the detail of it but look into it.

I wouldn't be buying a car from Carmax....its a rip-off.
You can get brand new cars with full warranty got around those prices.
 
DO NOT GET HYUNDAI, the resale value is TERRIBLE

try to get a used Civic, but for 13g, that #4 corolla> #3's

spend extra $2000-3000 invest in a better car, those Kia, Hyundai and whatever junks Americans make under 10k will end up costin you more
 
Those prices seem way too high to me.

I'm a big fan of Subaru's. AWD and they run forever. You should be able to find a 2.5rs (98-00 I believe) for around $10k. Or you could look for older Legacy GT's. Regardless, great, reliable cars.
