Looks like work didn't approve the purchase of a new lappy for me and I'll have to buy one myself.
Good timing, since my laptop died today!!!

anyways, i was thinking of apple, but i didn't want to spend that much money for the powerbook.
the ibook looks too small, and i'm not sure if the 14" is worth it.

so, now i prob want a windoze lappy and i'll run RH/WIN XP on it or something.
i'll prob want to use this as my main PC at home and give my PC to my brother.

- Less than $1300
- p 4 or Athlon
- 256 MB RAM or I'll add more to it to get 512
- HD larger than 30 GB
- Video (doesn't matter as long as it's not being shared with the main memory)
- 15" screen
- maybe a built-in cdrw (no need to play DVD)

I really hate going with compaq, but there's a laptop going for $1100 and it has all the specs i want.

Check Xpbargains as they have some nice deals on laptops (dells, hps, etc.)

such as:
Inspiron 8500 notebook w/ P4-2.2GHz-M, 15.4" WXGA display, 256MB DDR, 32MB ATI mobility Radeon 9000, free 40GB upgrade, DVD, USB2.0, Firewire, Modem, NIC, XP Home for $1149 (shipped after rebate(s))

Inspiron 5150 notebook w/ P4-3.06GHz, 15in SXGA+, 32MB RADEON 9000, 256MB DDR, 40GB, DVD, Modem/NIC, XP Home for $1149 (shipped after rebate(s))

They seem to fit your specs...

Having said that, try to do some more research on IBMs or Apples (you can't go wrong with those systems, as they are pretty impressive) I personally use an IBM T40 ...

you can checkibm's ebay shop
they have some nice systems for about $1300..

I know you hate Compaq, but so did I. Until the Compaq X1000 and its total "combo" deals. While not a P4 or Athlon, IMHO, the Centrino stacks up to both of them. You can pile up a 10% (last day is Aug. 1), with a 5% student discount, F@twallet eBates, $100 rebate, free shipping.

Configurations start out as low as ~$950 or so... but I might be biased, finally got mine yesterday. I like. 😀

Oh yeah, there are always Dell Refurbs 😛
