I asked about Samsung and it's clear the majority of folks dislike them. I know a lot of people have had IBMs fail of late, but I have also heard its only the 75GXP line too. I have also heard their RMA service is bad, but still I wondered what folks experience around here is. My only other choices are Maxtor and Seagate. I know nothing of Seagate, and personally have had nightmares with Maxtor. If only a 40GB Western Digital was in my price range I'd be happy because WD has always been good to me.

I recommend the Maxtor D740X drives, which are actually Quantum drives.

It's not without reason that the IBM line has been generally called the DeathStar instead of DeskStar. Supposedly the 120GXP is OK.

The 120GXP hasn't been out long enough to gain a reputation. Judging by the last two drive lines...I would avoid it.

My opinion is that their drives suck but their RMA service is very good. I had 2 75GXPs fail, I received both RMA replacements within 10 days of sending them in (separate occasions). In both cases I got a higher capacity, better drive back. Of course I sold them both.

markjs, how expensive is the 40GB WD? it can't be much more than any Maxtors!

although i loathe anything made by Maxtor, i have to say that they had the best RMA service. had a drive to me in less than 48hrs. of course, that drive died a month later so...:disgust:

Happily, I searched around and found a deal on a 40GB 7200RPM Western Digital. Seems I have always had excellent luck with them, even the one time I had to RMA one. I have seldom heard a bad word about WD.

I've heard a lot of good things about Seagate drives, all the ones I have ever had (even my old 2gig, which is still in my father's computer) never failed me.

My IBM drive failed back when they were ranked #1 (I had one of the first 75GXPs, they were supposed to be the best)...I got a new drive within like 72 hours (although it was also 30gigs *damn*).

Anyway, it has been up and running for like the last two years...I think they fail often for people who try to cool them, its the unequal cooling that screws up the built-in software and it messes up....I removed the fans I had blowing at it and no problems since *shrug, it should be the other way around*

Anyway, I would go with seagate (or WD, which I have heard good things about) :)

I've had a 60GXP for about a year and a 120GXP for about 4 months now with no problems with either. But in the past I've had problems with Maxtor and WD drives, so I think its a matter of luck.

I, too, have had a 75GXP (60G) hard drive go bad. I started hearing this horrible scraping sound. I should have backed up my hard drive immediately. This was my first experience with hard drive failure. I had it little over a year and lost all my vids, pics, and personal files (ouch!). I was lucky to purchase another IBM within a week and was able to transfer greater than 20G of mp3's. I later purchased an identical 60G. Now I have 2 60g hdd. If you have read AT's faq on IBM HDD, you will see that the bad disks were made in Hungary. That is exactly where my bad hard drive was made. The new ones are both made in the Phillipines. Hope they solved their problem (and mine as well). :)

My 40g 60GXP is currently in the RMA process. My Western Digitals are working fine. So is my Maxtor.

The 75GXP series definatly had a flaw in them. But the 60GXP and 120GXP, from what ive read, seem to fail as much as any other drive.

I would go with a Seagate Barracuda IV. They are excellent drives. I have used a bunch of them and have not had a single problem.

From what I have gathered, the Seagates are good. From my personal experience, and from what I have also heard, Western Digital is good. As I said I settled on Western Digital, because I have good personal experience, and even when I had to RMA one it was easy and quick. What all my posts (I posted at HWC too) have taught me is, Seagate and WD are great. Maxtor is good but not as good, IBM is ok, and Samsung is crap.....well I suppose I'll stick with Western Digital from now on, even if it costs more.

My IBM deskstar has lasted me three years with no problem, and my maxtor's lasted two with the same result...

I have 2 60gxp for a year and 8 maxtor for a while. Not a problems with any one. Can't say that there's any perceivable performance differences either. Pick the cheapest one.

I'd stay away from IBM drives personally... I use a Barracuda IV by Seagate. It's silent. I had a 60GXP that would WHIIIINE.
