Ok, screw Halal meat

I think a Halal diet would suck ass.

According to about.com, no pork, no alcohol, animal has to be sacrificed a certain way ... shit man ....... that would suck!

If I recall correctly all meat in england is Halal, since its just cheaper that way than to have two different types.

butchering based on superstution rather than reason.. joy
Reason ain't working out so good either. How many times have meat packers been busted for starting to carve up animals before they were dead? Hanging chickens by their feet and electrocuting them doesn't look too hot either. Anything to speed up production and make one more dime.

I don't know how the cows are slaughtered for the meat that I buy at the store. I don't much care either. Slicing them open like that doesn't seem the cleanest or most efficient way though.

There's a reason meat looks all nice an packaged in the meat isle.

so i dont have to do the work of growing my own delicious animals before i kill and butcher them?

the air gun appeared to be quite a bit more time efficient, since the halal method require slitting the throat and letting them bleed, so i assume you arent referring to the actual video...?

isnt kosher done the same way?

also, those knives are really sharp. kinda surprised they just have a guy do that *Shrug*

/not a fan of animal torture and dont really care about religiously slaughtered meat, but i wouldnt turn down a burger right now

There was a middle eastern restaurant next to my work. Used to go there until I found out what halal meat actually was. Prior to that, I always thought it was just blessed by a cleric, not this. They'll never get my business again. Bashing the animal's skull in with a hammer is more humane. You can see the terror in the cow's eyes. It's being allowed to suffer. This is savage, but what do you expect from a culture that views stoning as an appropriate method for killing humans.

Yes, kosher is done the same way. Pays to educate yourself.

I remember hearing about the British meat industry being near exclusively halal due to economic reasons. MPs at one point wanted to force manufacturers to label it so consumers could choose. Not sure if that passed.

I'd say that stoning is certainly an appropriate way for killing humans. Some of them at least. It's also too good for some others.

I had no idea that it went like this. OP, thanks for sharing.

Putting a bullet through its head definitely seems like the most humane way to slaughter an animal. But, to be honest, I'm not going to boycott any particular meats because the animals neck was sliced open instead of being killed some other way.

Turning an animal into meat is never going to pretty.

I'm more interested in how we treat them before they get to the slaughterhouse myself.

Few people today know or want to know how their food gets from the field to their plate. You think that's "inhumane," check out how chickens are eviscerated at a poultry processing plant. We went to one on a field trip in culinary school and it took me 3 months before I could eat chicken again. 😀

There isn't really a humane way to slaughter animals we intend to eat other than maybe an ax.

The bolt to the head seems to work pretty fast.

Im all for eating meat, just kill the animal as quickly as possible. No reason to make them suffer needlessly.

There's nowhere to get lamb at a remotely decent price around here other than Halal markets, and frankly, their prices aren't very decent either.

Video from slaughterhouses of any sort is relatively gruesome, especially if you were not raised in a farm setting where you go from feeding the animal one day to the animal feeding you the next. Most of that video (that I watched; about half of it) is the animal's death throes, involuntary muscle movement.

My neighbor raised sheep and the slaughter process, whether through slit throat or shot in head, there's some of the same twitching and whatnot that you see in the video. *shrug* That's what it means to eat meat. You want more merciful slaughter processes, don't avoid halal, avoid factory farmed meat. Buy your stuff from a local farmer who raised and slaughtered the animals personally. My husband is going to slaughter one of our goats next week.

Pretty much this.

It's never going to be pretty. If anyone here truly cared about how the animals they're eating are killed, they would be doing the slaughtering themselves.

The scale of things is pretty unfathomable. Just think of all the meat sitting in every store across the country right now. The idea that all of those hundreds of thousands of animals died a happy death is delusional.
