ok, quick question

I wanna network my 2 computers together for gaming purposes only. Will buying 2 $30 NIC's and some cable do me? Or do I need other hardware? Are they hard to set up, or is it basically plu ang play. Are any cards better than others?

if you use just two nic and no hub make sure you get cross over cabling and yes two nics and crossover cable is all you need

i suggest a linksis NIC their usualy cheap. and get some cat5 cable. dont pay more than like 20 for the cable unless you need more than 100 ft of it. yeah its basicly p&p but you need to make sure you have the same protacalls installed is suggest itcp/ip from microsoft.

2 nics and crossover cable does work, but i suggest getting like a nice little 5 port d-link hub, just to have it and you could also later play against more than 1 person

i agree. and i also recommend linksys nic

So I need 2 NICs, a nice little 5 port d-link hub (price on that?) and some cable. Are these easy to find items. I don't have a Best Buy around, only an Office Depot and Wal Mart. I wanna have it done by tommorow to.

What I'd do:

- Pick up a couple cheap NIC's (for what you'll be doing you don't need expensive network cards, Pro 100+ management adapters are NOT necessary).
- Invest in a switch. I picked up a little 8 port 100 mbps switch for $50. With the price so close to that of a hub don't waste your time with a dumb hub.

1) 2 NICS
2) a *CROSSOVER* RJ45 cable

notice the *CROSSOVER*. 😉
Many newbie networking people make this mistake the hard way. "Why can't I ping my other computer?" "Why isn't it in Network Neighbourhood!?" "Aaaaaaaaa!"

I think I might pick up that kit.

Are there any sights to go to for newbies like myself?

Also, what is the difference between a switch and a hub?

I would also like to share our cable connection. Currently I do not have internet connection on my computer, but we have cable on the family's computer. With the Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch will I be able to access the internet on both computers and have them be networked together? Also, will I be able to be connected on mine looking at AT or something, while on the other computer they be looking at a different site?

With the linksys 4port router, you could do all that you want.

You will only need two nics if you pick up a 4port router as the router has a built in switch. That might be your best option if you are looking to share cable access.

The router will do all that you need. You run the cable modem into the WAN port of the router and then from the router to the two computers. Just enable DHCP on both computers and you are set to go. So all you need is the router, the NICs in bother computers and cabling. If pick up the router and have any problmes configuring it feel free to contact me via PM, email or aim.

Thanks. Now my dad is scared I'll tear up the computer. I built mine and upgraded his for him, but he still won't trust me. I put a Linksys NIC in mine and his already had one. His concern is whether we will be able to both be on the internet looking at two different things at the same time. Is there any possibility that I could completely screw up his computer just by networking it?

Show your dad these links tell him I am old and know what I am doing (hehe).

The Basic Options to Share Internet Connection (Internet Sharing 101).

Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...?

Here is an example of what you need:

Cable/DSL Router: $69.95

http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10300833&hdwt=30704&loc=14617

CAT5 cable: 15' - $4.95

http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10028860&hdwt=30506&loc=14617

NIC: $11.45

http://www.us.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?sku=10300794&loc=14708

Router = $69.95

2x Cat5 15' = $10

2x NIC = $23

$103

And your family gets to the 21st century. (Spidey07).

no all you have to do is enable DHCP on both the computers and plug them into the router. then configure the router with the info provided by your cable company and you are both on the internet. You can both do separate things, look at different websites, have different screen names signed on. its like having multiple internet connections in one. i have a linksys router right now with five different comps on it in my apartment. five different SN's signed on on AIM.

you really cant mess anything up so tell your dad not to worry.

Don't worry. But after you set up the computer to share internet connections, be sure to get a software firewall on all computers to block out any internet traffic. That way, hackers and other people won't be able to trace your computer. Getting the router and hooking up both computers to it will allow you to do both gaming and sharing internet connection. Good luck. Let us know if you have any problems. 🙂
