Ok, PSU died, now i need some recommendations to buy a new one..

This morning my PC decided not to fully turn on. I was stumped for the first 30mins figuring what was wrong, since it was only turning on for 2 seconds (all fans spin) and then turned itself off. It was working fine last night when it was shut down.

Checked the sticky off top, I don't really know what wattage PSU I should be looking for, and the ultimate PSU Thread by Chaotic - link doesn't work.

My system consists of the following:
Asus K8V-SE Deluxe
1GB Kingston Valueram PC3200
MSI 6600GT
Sony DVD and Liteon CDR drives
Vantec Fan Controller
Floppy/card reader all in one
Samsung 160GB SP1614N (the silent one)
MDT 100GB (some random brand). Didn't know if it was great or not, net says "MDT reassembles hard drives using components outsourced from major brand hard drive manufactures ie. WD, Maxtor and Seagate. By stamping on the OEM brand MDT they are able to pass on a substantial savings of 35-40% to equivalent brand name manufacturers."

Previously, I had used this system (except the 6600GT and samsung replaced both a 9800pro and a 40gb WDD HD) for a little over a year. I pretty much do not know much about Psu's, except that higher is better. And a few brand names such as Antec, Aspire, etc.

I had been using this case and the psu that came with it, it's a 350W unpopular brand by Turbolink. I took a pic of the PSU specifications with my camera right here. It uses a 20pin connector to the MB and then another 4pin one.

Well, again personally I don't know what PSU I should get, and how much I should be spending. I don't do any overclocking.
I would like something that will last me another 4+ years at most.

Checked out the stuff at newegg, but sometimes I even notice the antec 400w's costing higher than the 500w's by some other company (such as aspire)

Wattage means nothing(sort of) a 480w PSU can easily beat out a 900w PSU, its all about the quality of the PSU, do not go with something cheap and fall for gimmick advertising. I suggest you read a lot of PSU threads on here (use the search) so you can learn more about PSU's. I would recomend a 420w OCZ ModStream for you, but something cheaper like an Antec would not be bad either.
 
The PSU round up review by xbitslabs revealed that those OCZ modstream PSU couldn't provide a stable output compared to their higher end model powerstream.

Someone else on this board reported having artifacts with his SLI setup and after calling BFG, they told him his 520W modstream PSU was the culprit.

I personally like antec, out of HUNDREDS of antecs i have out in homes, 1 has failed (in over 4 years).

Enermax is also good.

Thermaltake has a good reputation on these boards, but ive had a number of thermaltake failures in under 6 months of operation, and goofy power rails on a few others i had to RMA them over (rails were over 5% off).

AVOID GENERICS, I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. The failure rate on generic PSUs over 1 year is nearly 60% (i actually calculated this the other day) even on extremely low-load systems. Generics include Powmax and Turbolink.

I dont have enough experience with Sparkle to make a recommendation. Sorry.
 
The XClio 450 is back at newegg, get one while you can...

yep. Given they vacationed me for a BS reason (illegal where exactly? what country's laws are they bound by? I hold a Class A license from the DEA, so if it is US law, they are still in the wrong) a week isn't bad.
 
Thanks for all the replies everyone, checked out all those PSU's,

I'm about to order one of them off newegg.

However, I went ahead to go buy a brand new temporary power supply to use for now, from fry's. I am going to return it once I get the one off newegg. The model is a MGE LC-B450E same as this one: http://www.shentech.com/mgemgam12v45.html It is 18A on 12V, whatever that means, but my old one was 12A so i thought it would be important to get this higher.

Well, what happened after I hooked it up:

Everything went on fine, I had hooked up the molex to the 6600GT. Computer booted, and then 3 seconds later I saw fire coming off the 6600GT!! Immediately in WTF mode I turned it off and unplugged the power.

Take a look at the 6600GT. Some chip on the top right of the board burned up, near a capacitator.

I think I am going to file a RMA with the 6600GT right now, I have to run the system on a 3dfx voodoo3 pci.

Could it have been that this card was faulty to start with, that caused all these problems?
 
i have heard that the modstream has had problems, but under the hood from what i know they are the same, in mobo monitor my rails are solid, and with my setup below i do not have any instability, hmm.

I so do NOT think so... PS can burn vidcards but no vidcard can burn a PS...( correct me if im wrong)

Any part has the potential to take other components out when it dies. However, a power supply (especially a cheap one), has a much higher chance of killing other parts when it goes.

+12V amps are very important, more so than the wattage really. 18A is probably sufficient (although at the low end) for your set up, but I think you should get a PSU with closer to 25A @+12V.

ok, everything sounds good so far...

Waiting for the PSU to arrive from newegg (ordered two actually, one antec and the other is the sparkle that ribbon recommended)

I need to wait for a RMA status from MSI, I owned the 6600gt for pratically less than a week before it burst into flames. No overclocking/mishandling/abuse was ever done to the damn thing and it decides to crap out.

Whatever's the cause, I want to fix the thing.
I am currently running the pc now with the voodoo3, no problems at all so far around 2+hours.

I feel for ya man. 🙁 I hope you like noise, that is anything but quiet. There are far better choices.
 
I dont think they will let you RMA a burned card, I know this is the case with mobos, not sure abou this tho.

I have to say I laughed out loud a little when I read your card caught fire 😛
 
For all the praise that Seasonic Super Tornadoes get around here, I'd look into one of those. Shortly after I purchased my Enermax 420w, there was a great deal on a Seasonic of similar wattage. My Enermax is a good, solid PSU, but I wish it were a tad quieter. I can't imagine the noise and hiss that a crapola PSU generates.

I second the advice of everyone else. Stick to name brands such as Enermax, Seasonic, Antec...

Don't skimp on the PSU or eventually you'll likely be out more money than you saved on the PSU.
