OK peeps what the heck am I doing wrong?

I bought this Netgear 8 port switch/router

and

This 16 port Switch/Lan

If I plug in like my half of the computers and netgear SC101 storage devices into the netgear unit, and run a cable from the number 1 port from the netgear router to the number 1 port to the 16 port switch and plug in my wife and kids computers to that we all can get on the inter net but it is S L O W, Im talking 25kbs on a 15mb line!

Now if I put the SC101 units on the 16 port switch and all the others on the 8 port netgear we all run fast, BUT, none of us can access the netgear storage devices as if the 16 port switch doesnt even exist.

So what in the fudge am I doing wrong??

I asked about this a while back, and I thought I was doing this as I was told how to do it and Im hoping Im doing it wrong. Im going to bed right now, Im spent, but Im looking forward to hearing what all you may have to say on this. And just so you all know, I went and took all I had and plugged it all into the 16 port switch, all computers, all sc101's, and had 3 ports left, I filled them up with more from the 8 port netgear router and got nothing at all then, no internet, no accessing the router, nothing 😛

But there you go, please tell me what Im doing wrong, Id like to keep it the way I have it, with all the computers in the router, the netgeaar storage units in the 16 ports, and to try and figure out how to hook up my Linksys wireless router to the 16 port as well so I can get my Wii hoooked up to the internet again as well some how too. Im just lost as to why internet is so slow when the pcs are hooked to it, and why it is now none of the pc's can get into the SC101 storage devices on the 16 ports switch 🙁

Let the suggestions begin!

TIA!

Yep, judging by the switch you have, you'll need a crossover cable. Doesn't look like a newer switch that has the auto-x feature. Unless the switch has a port that says "Uplink" on it, then you can simply use that port.

Although I just read the entire description for the switch you got and it should do auto-mdix. Try eliminating all devices, then plug a machine into just the switch, see if you get an IP address and can ping your router. If you can't, sounds like your switch is bad.

The other thing to remember is that everything from the switch to the router and beyond must go through that one cable. You cannot plug in two cables in parallel, that would cause a broadcast storm that (usually) swamps both units. Parallel links include a wired and wireless between the same two point at the same time.

Try to balance the devices such that things that tend to talk to each other are on the same device (the switch or the router).

Make sure your cables are good quality and in good condition. If the cable aren't "store bought" then go buy some decent cables. They DO make a difference.

If you're running torrents, adjust your application to reduce the number of active streams; most consumer-grade routers will run out of NAT translation table entries and recovering old translation entries for new streams slows things down a bit (and in some cases, locks things up and forces a router restart).

Make sure you are at the same duplex setting at both ends of each cable, sometimes "auto" doesn't work (rare, but it happens) if full-duplex is slow, try half duplex ... if half duplex is faster, then your cables suck and are not properly made, get new cables (buy some).

If you're getting any traffic through between the switch and router, it's not a cross-over issue. In a "crossover / not crossover" problem, you either get traffic through or you don't.

Make sure all your drivers are up-to-date.

Good Luck
Scott

I've seen issues where not using a crossover causes the items to fail autonegotiation, causing a duplex mismatch...which is usually the cause of dog-slow traffic like that.

Im so screwed. As I mentioned in my other thread ALL of this crap I dont understand, and with health going south, and my mind going with it even further, I am having an ever harder time making sense of things. In my last thread I was told it was simple, just get a router, and a switch, plug the one cable from the router from the switch and your done, its really that simple, and I asked and asked again, in te thread and in pms I was getting.

Im up shits creek now, between all the NEW cables I bought from monoprice, and these two items, which the manual, one sheet of paper says, the 16 ports supports autp MDI/MDIX function, eliminating the need for crossover cable and is supported on all ports. The switch is PNP and each port can be used as general ports or Uplink ports and can be simply plugged into a server, a hub, a switch, or a router and so on, using straight cable or crossover cable. So unless I can get this working soon before the wofe gets home, or Im going to have one hot mama for wasting quite a bit of money on this stuff, even though our wireless stuff took a dump, and when it was working it was crap too always booting us off and weak signal and all, which is why I gave up on that stuff and decided to go this route, but I got soo much crap I almost need all these ports 😛

I have also tried just using my Linksys wireless/4 port router as well, used one cable out it to the switch, and ran everything else to the switch, meaning out the linksys I ran the one cable from it to the switch to run internet to the switch where everything thing else I own was plugged into, and in doing that non of the computers got internet at all. We all were able to get into the netgear sc101 devices, but for some reason internet was not coming from the Linksys unit to the switch 😛

I even tried to get into the router with the 192.168.1.1 and couldnt even do that! So I tried another wireless 4 port I have, nothing, ao I tried one more, nothing. And yes I hooked them all up at first, and they were working before I ever got this stuff, and after I tried I reset them hitting the switch in the back still got nothing, and I was not trying to get into them wirelessly, but through the net cable. Now the crazy thing is, I hook back up the new 8 port, keeping it with all on the 16port and I can get into the that without changing anything. And I tried resetting it, and had success in doing so, and still got nothing, no internet to the switch, so Im back to having all but the SC101's on the 8 port, and the SC101's are on the 16 port and nothing still cant see them.

This crap is making my head spin 😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛

Just plug it all in they say, its super easy they say, BLAH! Im so ready to pull out my BFH and take out some stress 🙂

Honestly, it should be PNP, if the unit is actually working correctly. It appears the switch you bought may be defective. If it is, of course it won't work correctly. I'd recommend more of a name brand unit. Yes they cost more but it's what is linking all your equipment, it needs to be a functional unit. Here's the one I'd go with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833122004

Well it would seem I must of done something right and as for now I anit touching nothing!

8 port, pigs are on it, the Sc101's. I call them pigs because to me they resemble them. 1 wire from the #1 port from that goes to the #1 port on the 16 port switch.

On the 16 port switch all else is plugged into it.

I turned off all power to everything. I tured it all back on and hit the reset switch on the back of the 8 port router. I then got the start up screen, went through its process and it now sees the pigs, and all pc's are on the net, so for this time being till next tax time Im leaving it all alone till such time I upgrade it all to a 1gb stuff, but for now, it seems to be doing ok, internet not as fast as I like it to be, steme is downloading one of my games at 350kbs but I wont complain at all, fast enough for me and its all talking to one another so I wont tempt fait. And when I do upgrade to better, it will be better stuff.

Thanks for the help everyone, took some of the suggestions and just tried what I could make out, and its working now.

Your downloading at 350kB/sec How fast is your internet? 350kByte/sec sounds like around a 4mbit connection. If your internet is around 4mbit, then your downloading at the correct speed. Check out this site for a speedtest and see if it matches up fairly close to your internet speed: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Thanks again everyone!

One last question. All my long cables going to my pc's are cat 6 for they are 50 foot, should I change all my other cables, my 6 foot ones, all to cat 6 as well or leaving them as cat 5 ok mixing cat 5 and 6 is ok? Meaning Im not choking the system or anything by mixing the 2 right? I got cat 5 going from the SC101's and from the router to the switch providing the internet to the 16 port switch, then all the rest is cat 6 out going to the pc's.

For GigE, Cat5e and above will support it and is fine mixed with Cat6
