Ok, need some help

Yesterday when I turned on my computer, it would freeze at the memory check.

Basically, it would get to "memor" and freeze. Not sure what had happened, I rebooted and got the same thing. Over and over.

At first, I thought perhaps some of the memory was bad. I pulled out a 512 stick, and was able to get past the memory error. However, it still happens. I can get past the memory check once in every 4 or 5 boots.

I also put a new MSI K7N2 mobo in to see if that changed anything, but I think the new mobo might be bad, as I got no signal to the monitor. I used two different video cards with the same result. (Ideas? I've gotten bad mobo's before, but suspect it might be something else). I was going to build my kids computer off this mobo.

I'm going to run memtest on both sticks here very soon, but wanted to get some ideas about what might be going on. I'm more inclined to thing it's a PSU problem (but it's occuring with a new PSU that I had lying around too) or a HDD problem.

So....does anyone have any ideas. I'm sure it's not the following: vid card, processor, and I doubt it's the mobo.

Thanks for any help, hints or advice.

the only things you haven't tried, realistically, are Memtest or cpu.

To narrow down the problem for definite, disconnect EVERYTHING from the mobo except:
cpu/fan.
psu
Case Spkr
Pwr sw header

What happens?
Do you get a beep?

If not, then according to your OP, i would think it might be the cpu.
If yes, then RAM.

Well, I just ran 7 bytes HOT CPU test pro 4 and the CPU passed everything (I ran the test after I posted). So I belive the CPU to be fine and working correctly.

I'm going to run memtest now, and see what happens.

If the memory passes fine, then I'm really guessing at what could be the problem. Is it possible for a failing harddrive to cause a freeze during the memory check on boot up?

What brands and models are the power supplies you've tried so far, and what are the full specs of the computer please 🙂

Here's the specs:

Soyo KT400 Dragon mobo
1 G Kingston DDR (removed one 512 stick - running 512 in the system right now)
ATI 9800 Pro
SB Audigy2
Liteon 832-s DVD R/W
Plextor 24/10/40A
Maxtor 40GB HDD

Powersupply: Antec 400W (Was the PSU installed when problem started)
CWT 300W PSU (currently in the system)

After the computer has been on a few minutes, I cannot boot back into the OS. The memory check locks up again. After letting it sit off for an hour or so, I was able to boot back up.

Short of just replacing the CPU, PSU, Memory, and Mobo......I don't know what else to look at or try.
