I think I'm in for a long ride. . .

He turns 13 next month.

Poetry's fine. Let him express himself or whatever. Poetry is a talent not many people have. Some people play sports, some people study, some people practice art.

Girls/hair/clothes/cologne? Don't simply let him take on the style of his friends and schoolmates. Spend an afternoon with him and teach him about what girls want, how to treat them, and how to dress to impress (decent, good-looking clothing vs. trendy crap). Don't try to relate to him, as he must learn to relate to everyone else and you'll just create some awkwardness between you and he. Try to make sure that he knows he doesn't have to do things your way, but that your way is better.

Unless he really is emo. Then you should beat him. 😛

yeah, that is about where it happens

my daughter will be 14 in april and she is about 60% smart mouth teenager and flipping over at about 10% a month

the term emo gets so misused... since when has writing poetry, something done for hundreds of years become 'emo'

the hair streak thing is metro anyway.

Man don't YOU remember what it's like being that age, just go with it and don't give him a hard time about it. Puberty sucks enough w/o the 'rents ragging on ya for it.

He's emo now.

NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah, he deffinitely sounds like hes hitting puberty and going in a very emo direction. Hopefully this will only be a "phase" or you may have to kill him in order to stop the spread of emoness. OK, maybe killing him is going to far, but If i had a son and they starting writting poetry that would scare the cr@p outa me.

well, is it good poetry?

I wouldn't have a clue how to explain to a 13 year old how to attract girls. Would you?

Next thing you know you'll have him picking up college women or something.....

time for "the talk", i would explain the "hit it & quit it" method to him...and give him some condoms.

I agree with this. My parents never gave me "the talk" and I'm almost 19 and still haven't tapped anything better than a keg.

so "the talk" magically makes you attractive to women or what? maybe thats why I can't get anything either. they never gave me the talk.

i don't understand how you correlate the talk and the ability to get laid...

Agreed.

And it's a girl he likes.

nothing wrong with him. how do you determine if his clothes is uncool?

writing poetry is a form is expressing what he feels onto paper, and not through cigarettes or alcohol at parties.

axe spray is just a smell to help him practice what he may want to have a scent others can know him by. it's kind of like cologn, you know.

what he wants to do with his hair is upto him, as long as it's affordable and not over the extremes. if so, it will come out of his own pocket, and your own choice to allow him to do such actions.

right now wouldn't be a bad time to start treating him like an adult. gaining his trust is one thing, but pushing him away because you are not familiar with his new habbits anymore is terrible. the best way to teach is by example.

Apparently, Loke's just been doing it wrong all these years.

Hair streaking is kind of weird.

People are getting a bit too worked over the poetry, I wrote poetry when I was around that age (maybe a bit older) but it was for GIRLS I was interested in and not some emowhining life is teh suck kill me now type deal. Poetry is ++ for girls applied well.
