Ok, my apartment is now completely wireless.

No more ethernet cables running along the edge of the living room, and no cable modem sitting in the middle of the floor. Hooked up a USB wifi adapter to my PC, moved all the networking hardware behind the TV, and now the blinds dont get caught on networking stuff 🙂

congrats notfred, how much did it all cost?

Not much, really:
Microsoft wireless kit from FS/FT (had amn-500 router and a mn-510 usb adapter): $100.
Apple airport card: $99.

That's really it, $200 for 2 PCs.

not really, but there's already another wireless access point that someone next door has unsecured, you could use that one.

i hope you either have WEP enabled, or some sort of MAC authentication. my network is too precious to let someone steal all of my data.

I think congratulations are in order notfred!

What kind of speeds are you running at and can you still access your network outside of the apartment?

i thought of going wireless for both of my desktop and my laptop but couldnt justify the cost. So I went with $5 25ft Cat5 cable instead of $70 PCI adapter. I got Netgear MR814 and Sony PCWAC150S PCMCIA card. Love the sony cuz of the slim antennna 😀

I wonder if having all these wireless components can lead to cancer. They still do studies on it for cell phones. No proof yet, but just makes ya think. That's my only stupid fear.

Aside from that, how's wireless networking? Is it as good as one with wires? better? Or is it prone to more problems?

I was thinking of getting the microsoft wirelss router 'cause it looks so cool, but don't have any experience with wireless stuff.

WiFi is cheap esp with this Hot Deal, $50 WAP, $30 PCMCIA laptop card or USB adapter for a desktop.

$80 to go WiFi for one machine, not bad.

I love Wifi but whenever I need to transfer a huge file from my laptop, I just bring it downstairs and hook it up to the router with some good ole cat 5.

Sweet, I'd like a similar setup here at my home, but I still have concerns about security 🙁

I LOVE the Microsoft WAP, best WAP I have ever used, well worth the money.
