Ok, maybe I'm retarded

Just got an 88 Lincoln Towncar. Bought the car about 2 weeks ago. I seem to recall (but not entirely too sure) filling up this car at some filling station after putting about 100 miles on not having a problem. Then i put on maybe 200 more since then and I have to fill up again now. Well, I went to a place and tried to gas up. I got 5 gallons rang up on the dial @ the pump, however at least half of one of those gallons poured out of the tank. The nozzle only fits in about 1.5 inches instead of a full 4-5-6 inches. After running about a gallon it starts to leak out, so i have to use multiple squeezes in order to get the full 5 gallons (with only 80% efficiency)

Why would the nozzle slide all the way in? Am i missing a handle somewhere?

The fuel door is a manual one, no button to open, you just slide it open with your finger, and the cap itself is a simple screw off deal.

I looked over the owner manual in the gas up area in maintanence section and it did not have any information about any switches that need to be flipped or buttons to be popped or anything. What kind of obstruction is keeping me from fueling up? I'm out of gas!

Maybe you are retarded. Have you ever thought about all the people who are more than just a little bit retarded and don't even know it because they lack the conscious thought to figure it out?

Maybe there is some sort of blockage - like something lodged in there? I don't think theres any (road) cars out there that require you to do anything more than open the door, unscrew the cap and put the pump in. I'd get it checked out... if you can manage to drive it to a mechanic 🙁

Are you sure you're not using a diesel pump accidentally? The diesel nozzle is a larger diameter than the gasoline nozzles and will not fit into the fill hole as well.

If you have put diesel into the tank, DO NOT START THE CAR! The tank will need to be pulled from the vehicle and emptied. If you run the engine and diesel gets into the rest of the fuel system, then you'll have to replace it, injectors and all.

No, it was definitely regular gasoline. Two different stations, each of which I have been refilling other unleaded vehicles with for years.

from what i've read, a *tiny* bit of diesel in a gas engine won't hurt that much, but gas in a diesel engine is a big no-no. i've never had this happen to me, however.

Glad it's not switched gas.

Somebody at the Milwaukee County Zoo put regular gas in a deisel lawn mower (like those $10,000 ones) and the engine almost died from the heat.

There could be some kind of strainer to catch debris down there. I've had trouble with gas cans with things like that anyways.

Diesel will cause problems for the fuel delivery system (i.e. injectors, regulators pumps, etc), but not for the engine per-se. So while it won't hurt the engine, it's still not a good idea.

That's a real smart idea  Sticking a lit match near gasoline

man, it was a joke.

I was actually going to respond to your first post cause I found it hilarious, but then I came up with this "retarded" idea.

Get it? haha?

lol. oh, man, it's getting late.

Ok, does anyone have any real ideas as to what the problem could be?

There certainly has not been a wealth of intelligent contributions from fellow Lincoln owners and/or automotive professionals.
