COLUMBUS, Ohio Three people will face a judge on Monday after being charged in connection with a large block party that spiraled out of control near the Ohio State University campus over the weekend.
Michael Shivak, 21, Brian Witt, 21 and Matthew Coleman, 19, each face charges of felony assault on a police officer, 10TV's Jason Frazer reported.
Coleman resisted arrest, police say, and faces a second charge.
The charges stemmed from a block party on Saturday night on East Woodruff Avenue, which is known as Woodfest.
"It was pretty much like a normal party. There was no fighting," said student Zach Zimmer. "The only thing we were really doing was, it was kind of pouring onto the street."
It was then that the party took a turn.
"There were a couple of times when cars did try to go through the street that people in the back of the crowd were throwing cans of beer and empty boxes," said student Jack Rodgers.
Officers began moving in to disperse the crowd, but some partygoers threw things including full cans of beer and bottles at them. Three officers suffered minor injuries but were expected to be OK, Frazer reported.
Police responded by using pepper spray to break up the crowd, which had swollen to as many as 1,000 people.
"Our response is more that appropriate," said Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner. "It cleared out the area and it prohibited it from escalating."
Student Alex Curti said it was unfortunate that the actions of a few people caused problems.
"It's just awful that one stupid person throws something at a police officer, which you know not to do, and it can ruin it for everyone," he said.
pretty sure those bandages and bruises are not from pepper spay...more like a billy club.
