OK. I'm gonna help in the race, but first I need help :)

OK peoples I've ignored your advertisements as long as I can. I'm going to help out in the SETI Race. I have 40 P3 systems to lend to the race (and I'm the one who gets to say what goes on em) and possibly longer. My big question is, Is there a proxy or something similar I can setup for downloading WUs. Can I run Seti as a service and thus make it transparent to users (This is the big one otherwise I can't do it). I need the proxy as well otherwise I cannot download WUs on the workstations as authentication is required to access the net. So if I can point them at my machine and send them out, then all is fine cos it's on my account 🙂

First things first....welcome to the TeAm! You'll find many, many people willing to help you.

My recommendation would be to check out the universal installer that Shuxclams and bot2600 have been working on. It should take care of everything you want. You'll want to setup one PC with SetiQ that will go out to the net and cache workunits for the local pc's.

Welcome kazeakuma to the TeAm! 😀

I can say Oh YES to all of the above...hold on...I'll get someone in here to answer with the install's for the SERVICE! 😀

As for the proxy, there is an excellent program called SETIQueue that works wonders. Very easy to setup and run.

It can be downloaded here...http://www.reneris.com/seti/default.asp

Other's can help on the service install and I've not even finished and I see that SoulAssassin has beat me to the punch! :Q

Welcome to the TeAm (soon to be! ) 🙂

excellent, thanks for the quick replies
I'll probably get round to it on monday seeing as it's knock off time for me here. But I'll be installing it on my home pcs tonight and checking out the setiqueue.

All in the name of TA 🙂

Beautiful and welcome aboard! 😀

If you need help drop me a note, i have SetiQueue-(1-pc) and service installs-(98/2000/nt) running exactly as you describe, also behind a proxy.

<-- doing the cartoon Snoopy dance once again

I seem to be doing a lot of dancing for new TeAm members here lately... 😀 WELCOME ABOARD!!!

Welcome to the TeAm kazeakuma 🙂

If you need any help with SetiQueue or the setup with anything else, don't be afraid to ask, we will all help you out 🙂

Welcome to the team kazeakuma!
BTW, sorry I can't be of more help...I just run SetiQ on a two-computer home network, and am having trouble with getting SETI to run as a service myself. 😱

Welcome kazeakuma!

I'm running a 250 workstation "farm" and would be more than happy to help you out. 🙂 If you're running NT or 2000, it will be very easy, using the automated installer with SetiQueue. The service is invisible to all the clients and you get up-to-the-minute stats on the SetiQueue machine (watch them fly! 🙂 ). Shuxclams is also a great resource in getting things up and running. Post any questions you have and you'll have answers before you know it! 😀

Hoping to do an install @ home over the weekend...I found the dual-CPU, install as a service for W2K Server. But, I also need to cache the WU's, so the server doesn't connect to the Internet any more than once/day, preferably at a scheduled time.

Can SetiQueue do this for me? Any other advice?

Yep. By default, Setiqueue uploads results (and grabs new WUs) once a day. You can choose the time for that to happen (default is 1am local time I believe) or even hold the results in the queue until you're ready to upload them. 🙂

Thanks Poof...I gave up on DC with the DM fiasco, and the Seti client just wasn't as clean as the dnet one. But, staring at the duallie server in my basement, running 24x7, doing almost nothing, I'm feeling guilty. So, I'll try and get to installing this weekend.

OK, I got the 2 cpu clients installed, and they appear to be running, after reconfiguring the proxy in the .reg file to point to myself (SetiQ). I checked the stats in SetiQ, but it only sees one client. Task Manager shows 2 instances of SetiLog and SrvAny, so it appears there are two Seti clients working.
Is this working right? How can I tell?

All were installed as services under W2K Server, BTW.

Yes, each computer (regardless of the number of CPUs in the system) will show up as one client in SetiQueue. It sounds like you have things running properly. Welcome to the TeAm!! 🙂

Thanks. I checked SetiQueue today, and it shows some cached units, but none flushed...which is probably OK, since it's not scheduled to reconnect until tonight.

I'll just have to wait until Monday to see my stats rise above the 1 WU mark.
