It shouldn't. I think you applied too much if you applied some to the chip AND some to the heatsink but if your system had nothing to begin with then it probably doesn't really make a difference. If you want to remove it or reapply use 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean it up.

I'm having trouble imagining the process. Did you put the thermal paste on and then suddenly go "OMG AIEEE.. what did I do???? *freaks out*"

Anyways, I don't think it'll hurt anything seeing how you normally put stuff on the heatsink it's eventually gonna get on the cpu one way or the other.

no i took the risk and put like |__| <----- that much on the cpu and put the heatsink on

that looks like a lot considering that for a normal CPU (K8, for example) you normally only use like a rice grain's worth of paste, and put it on either the IHS or the heatsink but not on both.
