I received 2 different 2.8e's this week with slightly different results, both cpu's came from NewEgg. The 1st cpu would run 3.5Ghz with a small increase in voltage to 1.4625v, default for the 2.8's is 1.3875. This cpu would not clock higher at any other setting, higher voltage, loose ram timings etc. It also ran hot! 48C at idle and 55C at load on this water system.

The second cpu which I'm typing on runs 3.5GHz at default voltage, it also runs rock solid at 3.71 GHz but at a very high voltage of 1.61v. This is a no win situation as the motherboard itself became very hot. Hot enough in fact I lowered the cpu in fear of damaging my motherboard.

My assessment of the current Prescott's:

Don't buy one intending to overclock unless you're using advanced cooling techniques. My best recommendation is to wait until the newer 775 pin cpu's arrive and their corresponding motherboards are available. The kinks of the Prescott systems should be ironed out by then.

Duh!!! I know it is real and have known...My complaint is the AMD fanboy club who likes to take their shots at Intel with silly comments....

Fact ...You cannot heat your house with a prescott running at 60c load...You cannot boil at 60-70c....There will be no fires started....and the global warming???

That is all I am saying....

We have seen high temps before, and even on non oc'd systems.....

I agree with your conclusions silverback on overclocking and need for high quality cooling.....NIce testing...

Guess we need to see if the new D0 stepping will help some things....

The fact is this will only go to limit overclockers at the moment.....

I am no fan for no company nor a person, nor a forum, nor a site, if you have no sense of humor it's your problem.
never be fooled by rigs and what's written downthere (=stop having prejudices) i use my intel system (P4C800-E/2.4C) for work and i love it as much as i love the system i use now to have fun. so stop feeling "attacked", (this is a msg to everyone).
One of the things that is making me join less and less here are issues with such things...

Sorry to say this in your thread SilverBack
your input helped me greatly though (gr8 looking pc btw) it'll be interesting to see how the 3.2E will do in there!

Anyway P4E has other power "needs" and it looks as if it's not mature enough to handle the task with the current stepping. what'll be interesting to see is the performance (less heat) of the new upcoming stepping and how it fares with upcoming VIA's and intel's solutions.

You may not be able to heat up a whole house, but you can sure heat up the room where the computer is.

I am not sure about that either...My northwood has been loaded in the low 60's for 4 weeks solid now and the room feels the same as the others...In actuality when I use those floor lamps that have those hot halogen lamp bulbs in them, that will heat the room far quicker. I shut that off, and now the room is very comfortable according to my temp guage, 74f versus 73f in the family room.....

Ofcourse I am using reported abit temps so that may not actually be 60c....

To Dustwhirl...trust me I don't feel threatened or attacked by the likes of you. Just the thread started out as a good study and it gets bumps with pointless replies...Go to Off topic if you want to be humorous...
