It really has nothing to do with complying to any standard. I could make the most standards-compliant page that was butt ugly and unusable in EVERY browser. Standards-compliant != works correctly in browser.

espn.com works fine with the build I am using.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5a) Gecko/20030728 Mozilla Firebird/0.6.1

In at least one case, Microsoft has been known to check user agent strings, and deliberately serve screwed up CSS to Mozilla, to purposely make a page look bad. I'm not sure if that's what's happening here, and don't have time to analyze the source to see what's going on.

Yup, it's happening to me with msn.com right now. I noticed the site looked messed up under Mozilla. Then I d/led prefbar extension, which gave the option to pretend the browser to be IE 6.0, which I set it to. Then went to msn, site looks like it should, except it's ugly with bad tabular design; but with Mozilla, it's missing sections. MSN can suck my toe.

MSN is the POS site that deliberately messes the site up if it sees that you're using Opera so I wouldn't be suprised to see it messed up with Mozilla too. Nothing new from MS. Squash the competition at any cost.

Go down the right hand side of the browser on the bottom and it should have a little button that says page style on it or something to that effect. Anyway select no page style and it will display better. It is a pain in the ass though.

Works fine if you decrease the font size. Anyone who reads Anandtech and ESPN is a well rounded individual.

Strange, works fine here with "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.5a) Gecko/20030728 Mozilla Firebird/0.6.1"

Because you just installed a POS built by random people hacking away at code

All of my boxes run software built by random people hacking away at the code and frankly it works better than the stuff put out by MS. And the fact that I have the source too means I can become one of those random people and fix things I don't like or think need fixed and yes I have done that before.
