ok here goes:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ socket 939 w/ winchester 2.0 GHz - $190.00

Gigabyte GA-K8NXP SLI nForce4 SLI Athlon 64 socket 939 DDR ATX Dual Gigabit LAN Raid/SATA2 - $199.00

two GeForce 6600GT w/ PCI Express 128MB DDR3 - $190.00 each - $380.00

Kingstons ValueRAM Dual Channel Kit 184 pin 1G(512x2) DDR PC-3200 - $130.00

Thermaltake VA3000 Dream Tower VA3000SNA Silver Mid Tower Case - $102.49

Seasonic 400W Super Tornado PSU - $82.00

Ok 3 questions:

1) What Hard drives should i purchase?

2) Is the duel 6600GT SLI setup overkill with just a 3200+?

3) What are your opinions on this setup?

Ok i have about 2 weeks till i can assemble this so please and thank you.

I think most will tell you to get one 6800 gt instead. It will perform better than two 6600 gts and you can add another down the road if needed.

Well you might be right although I think they're talking about 1600x1200 with AA and AF cranked. And in that case I think your cpu would bottleneck it. I can say for sure that the two 6600gt plan has been critisized quite a bit on these forums.

hmmm

well then maybe i should go back to the drawing board

would a 3500+ with 2 6600GTs be better than a 3500+ with one 6800GT? when it comes to high res gaming with HL2 and WoW?

and would the result be much better than the same setup with a 3200+?

I don't know about WoW but all three of those systems will have no probs running HL2 at high res, high quality with great frame rates. I can't say for sure what would be the best but it'll be close. The only real difference will be at 16x12, 8xAA. There sli shines but I think you'll need at least a fx-53 (or you could oc any of those processors to ~2.5 and get it done that way). But remember your upgrade path will be hindered my going with two 6600gts.

You can get a bfg 6800 gt at monarch for $415. That's what I'd do.

At high res eg 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 a 6800GT pretty much smokes 2 6600GT's in SLI so I would suggest the setup you listed and a BFG 6800GT PCI express card Also might want to look into the DFI SLI board if your planing on overclocking instead of the gigabyte one.

ok so lets try this one out:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ - $190.00

DFI LANparty SLI-DR nforce4 SLI - $237.00

BFG 6800GT PCI Express - $415.00

Kingston ValueRAM dual channel kit 1G(512x2) - $130.00

Thermaltake VA3000 Dream Tower Silver Mid Tower Case - $102.49

Seasonic 400W Super Tornado PSU - $82.00

Hard Drives Unknown - up to $215.00

Total = $1371.49

Now the guides on this website have a gaming computer guide that shows different levels of gaming computers. They have a Mid range setup for around 1500, but that includes moniter and speakers, do you think im going overboard?

Also is the 3200+ ok in this setup or do i need the 3500+?

It is your money after all......and you are getting a decent system.....if you don't think you are spending enough then chuck in a second 6800GT....

I you think you are spending too much then that lanparty board is very expensive.....there are cheaper SLI mobos out there........LANparty is the dogs bollocks if you want to overclock....but with value RAm it doesn't look like you will be doing that so get different SLI mobo

I would drop the SLI business. From what I have heard, the DFI LANparty NF4 Ultra-D boards can be modded to SLI, so if you want it, you can get it and save ~80 in the process.

btw, who has the SLI board in stock?

the lanparty ultra cant really be modded anymore according to nVidia.

and the sli board i named is available at zipzoomfly.com

supposing i wanted to overclock, what is a better memory for me to purchase?

I'm kind of confused right now on nvidia's comments, so I will leave that one alone.

Most people have been getting great results with PC3200, if you want to save some cash, and get the 3000+, you could spring for some PC4000, so that you could ratchet the FSB higher to make up for the 9x multiplier.

to help with your confusion........

......................UPDATE 2/05/2005: nVidia has acted to prevent, or at least make it more difficult, to mod the Ultra board to SLI. First, DFI has advised us, and posted on their website, that they will NOT sell the SLI bridge to buyers of the Ultra board. Second, nVidia has advised us that future shipments of the Ultra chipset have been modified so that the mod to SLI will no longer be possible. An additional side effect of this second action is that the "Dual Video" mode, which performs at about 90% of SLI performance levels, will only work with nVidia SLI drivers 66.75 or earlier. If you do a quick check of web driver postings you will see it is now very difficult to find 66.75 drivers. With a chipset modded to SLI the "Dual Video" mode worked through 70.xx versions of the nVidia driver. nVidia also made it clear they will continue to make driver changes to prevent functioning of any "non-standard" (8X/8X) operation of their SLI driver. This also throws into question whether the VIA "dual graphics" mode on the 894 Pro chipset will ever work with nVidia graphics cards. If you are interested in the current UT Ultra-D we suggest you buy one now if you can find it. Future versions of the UT Ultra-D will not have the same capabilities as a result of these actions..........this comes from an article on this website.

Do you have a link for the memory you recommended?

I haven't done much research on memory, but it makes sense to me that if value select works fine for performance, than pretty much anything that supports a high FSB will get you where you need to be. I have also heard of people getting to ~2.5 with the 3000+ on PC3200. Maybe somebody that actually knows something about RAM will weigh in on this issue.
