Ok, I have to brag about my latest find...

I always check Craigslist for that little old lady selling camera equipment that she really doesn't know very well. I've found a few deals here and there but nothing exceptional, until yesterday anyway.

I found a posting that was a little odd because the description didn't make sense. It was for two old Minolta AF lenses, and both are somewhat rare and typically expensive. The asking price was essentially lower than the worth of the lesser of the two...couldn't be true, could it?

Well, I met the seller* this evening, tested and inspected the lenses, and handed over the cash for the two perfect lenses. The first is a Minolta 35mm f/2.0, which is considered to be one of the sharpest prime lenses ever made by Minolta and the best portrait lens available for the Sony/Minolta mount. It's worth approximately $500. The second lens is the Minolta 200mm f/2.8 APO, which is worth around $800-900, based on the latest auctions.

Total cost, $450. 😀

Moral of the story...keep a keen eye on Craigslist and perhaps every three years, you'll find a fantastic deal! Can't wait to try these out, though I'm probably going to wind up selling the 200mm to fund the 35mm. I'm not positive though since the 200mm would be perfect for capturing my daughter in gymnastics. Decisions, decisions.

*The seller wasn't a little old lady -- she was a beautiful ~30 year old woman, former photography student who probably knew the value but wanted a quick sale for cash for an upcoming move.

My best recent deal off CL was a Nikon Speedlight SB-800 for $100.

Over the years, there have been dozens of CL steals that I've come across. If it's a really, really hot deal (like the SB-800), you usually have to reply within 20 minutes of the ad's post time to get it (in my city anyway). Here are a few more I remember:

Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.4 $100
Nikon D200 $200
Nikkor AF 35mm f/2 + Tokina 28-70mm f/2.8 + Lester Dine 105mm f/2.8 Macro = $150
Nikon D70 + Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm $300
Canon 580EX II $225

Wow, nice finds. It's a bit easier to find Nikon and Canon gear from what I've seen, but I'm not in the market, obviously. 🙂 I'm sure there's more Minolta stuff out there, but I usually only see the cheap things (old cameras with crappy kit lenses). Found a Minolta 3600HS(D) flash last year for $40.

Gotta love CL sometimes!

Agreed, I don't see much Minolta gear on CL. I've picked up a couple of Minolta AF 50mm f/1.7 lenses (both still attached to some ancient Minolta film bodies) for $40 each. That's about it.

I don't see much Pentax or Olympus stuff either. It's definitely a lot easier picking up used equipment for Canon/Nikon.

Only on AT will you find guys talking about deals they got on hardware while only mentioning hot wimmenz in passing 😉

You can get some pretty good deals on women through CL, too. 😉

Sweet boobies that is awesome.

The wife gets upset when I focus on the wimmenz. 😉

The last 50mm f/1.7 I looked at from CL was in such poor condition that I could scarcely believe it. The shutter had so much oil on it that it would literally stick in whatever position you wanted it (WELL away from "snappy" behavior!)! The glass was fine, and I told the woman it was worth about $5 for parts. She wasn't very happy with my assessment. 😀

I jumped on a few CL deals as well. The best was probably an 8mm fisheye lens. It was a manual lens and it sat on CL for several days. I passed the post twice while looking for other items. I paid $100 for it. I would have kept it, but used to very rarely. I ended up selling it for $350. It helped subsidize my Canon 10-22mm purchase (also off CL for $500).

Of course, you also always find the people selling film SLRs for hundreds of dollars for non-exceptional cameras. I'm sorry if you paid $600 several years ago, but if you haven't noticed, there's this digital revolution going on... 😉

Nice deal on the Minolta AF lenses. CL in my area is hard-hit for the people whom got cheap Sony A200/A300's

Got a steal from an eBayer whom wanted a quick sale: $200 for a Brand New Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 🙂

My best CL deal was a $2,000 pressure washer for $450. The seller was also a beautiful woman but she was going on vacation to Austrailia the next day. Guess she needed the money ...

Damn, nice get Andrew... Being a Minolta/Sony guy I'm quite jealous... In my area, there are a few vultures that are always circling Craigslist for Sony/Minolta deals, so they are usually gone within hours of posting... However, I've picked up a couple "good" deals, nothing as great as yours...
