ok I finally ask you guys....PC won't POST!

ok so I was using my computer like I always do, Its an AMD 1800+ Tbred, a Chaintech 7VJL KT333 board, 512MB (2x256) PNY PC2700, 450watt generic PS, Chaintech server case. oh and XfX Ti 4200.

well I come down the next day (after sombody in my family had shut it down the night before) to turn it on and find out nothing is displayed on the monitor. Its not posting. All the fans spin up on the mobo and in the case, and everything works such as CD-ROMs.

First I disable all my case fans, and unplug my Hard Drive and 2 ROM-Drives (from Mobo and PS). Still no POST. I take out the Ti4200 and put in a working TNT2...still no post. I take out one of the RAM modules. No POST. Switch RAM slots..No POST.

So I thought, ok, I must have fried my motherboard. My CPU hasn't been touched or taken off in months and was running at default speeds. I got my new motherboard today from newegg. A Shuttle KT400. Guess what. SAME THING HAPPENS. No Post. Im thinking crap it must be the CPU, but how? Its been working fine and it can't have overheated I have 8 fans and its in my cool basement (65F). It worked fine one day, next day it won't POST...its wierd. Its not like it just turned off, I SHUT IT DOWN, then it started not working.

Anyway, im down to CPU and PS, I just spent $53 on a new motherboard, which is fine, because it has 166 FSB support, but I really didn't want to buy a new processor. But do you guys agree that it sounds like its the CPU? It could be the PS, but it seems to work fine as all the fans power up and lights come on, unless the 3.3V is somhow not working right.

Any suggestions? I want my PC back! (I'm on my Mac now...which is nice...I like it better then windows...but its slow..)

To you get any beep codes on either of the boards??? Have you ruled out memory sticks as well???

Also trying to understand the premature death of an amd processor here...Did you oc at all?? If so what was the vcore set at??? 8 fans seems like a lot if you are not ocing. Heck I run 2100+ at 2700+ speeds and I use 2 fans and the hsf and my temps are just fine...I got an 1600+ in my office for the last 1-1/2 and I run 3 fans but have more drives and crap and the temps are higher and the chips is fine. Heat doesn't seem like much of a concern here so I would tend to lean towards the voltage given to it....the power supply seems fine since things spin up and you tried to unplug everything. May want to test it with a voltmeter to see it is puttig out enough juice.

I though maybe vid card got unseated but you seated into the new mobo and that should hav etaken care of that...

yes I HAVE overclocked before, although not much, as one of my sticks is actually PC2100, not 2700 (forgot to mention that). The most I've gone up to is 1.7ghz, but only for a few minutes, then I'd run it at 1.65ghz or so, not much of an overclock, and I didn't do it much, mostly it was always default. The MOST i've set the VCore to is 1.67 volts, normally it was at 1.625 when I overclocked, but like I said, It was at the default 1.5 for most of its life. I hear no beeps, on either motherboard, possibly a blown case internal speaker, or I plugged in speaker backwards, I'll give that a try.

I have a voltmeter somwhere I'll go try to find it. The CPU has been under a 3rd party copper HS with a 60mm 5500RPM fan for its whole life, and I havn't removed it in months (since January when I put the chaintech board in). I have 2 front case fans, 2 rear, PS fan, video card fan, and CPU fan, so thats 7, not 8, my bad.

Yea...I'm stumped here. If I could get ahold of a socket A processor to test I will, but I have to find trusting friends.

put in one stick (the 2700) and try again with only memory/cpu/video card plugged in NO drives and NO case lights (except power-on)

Edit I have NEVER seen a cpu die after working in a motherboard (assuming it has never been removed)

I just remembered I had an 850mhz Tbred in the PC my friend lets me run as a server. Would that work? Would the DDR Screw it up? Its in an HP. For Test purposes Im talking only.

wow that was wierd. I busted out my volt meter and connected it to a molex connector to test it. (With the computer on). Ok so it sparked and the computer shut down. Crap i thought, i fried my PS. Turn it on again and fans spin up just like before but still no Post. I connect it to the ATX-12V connector (not used) to try to test that, all of a sudden *BEEP* and BAM IT POSTS! WIERD! Anyway it works now! I bet my chaintech mobo still works too, I'll have to build a new PC out of spare parts. Anyway im glad I don't have to buy a new CPU.

Sounds like you shorted the power supply and that helped reset it maybe....Am I saying waht happened right???

I have seen this happen before. Sometimes one of the PCI cards or the VGA or the plugs are loose or some undetectable thing has occurred. What I did is took all the PCI cards out and left only the floppy attached and got the computer to post. Then I put it back together. I think something cased something to ground out or some similar thing.
