OK, I clearly need a new host...

Due to some fvckers messing with my host, I feel it is time to move on...

Who has the best deal at the moment?

I have a fairly large photo gallery (assuming it isn't gone...) so I need at LEAST 250 MB

Not the hosts fault that your cpanel got owned by script kiddies, try finding one that doesn't use cpanel next go around.

cPanel is the most popular contral panel in the world. cPanel didn't fault you, the person running your server did. Do a little research before signing up with a host.

True but dartworth is still correct.

My two favorite web hosts HTTPme.COM and Idologic.com uses cPanel (although Idologic now offers DA as well).

They wouldn't use cPanel if it was insecure (which it is). If you have experienced server admins who know what they are doing and keep on top of security alerts, loopholes, bugs, patches, updates, etc. then cPanel should be sufficient.

However I still prefer DirectAdmin and H Sphere over cPanel. It's just less bloated and buggy.

Ask yourself what did you expect for only $10/yr? If you got 2 months of hosting out of that, then consider yourself fortunate.

Search WHT for cPanel insecure and you'll find several examples such as

Just to comment on some of these cPanel problems.

cPanel is technically speaking a very well thought out control panel, just like Direct Admin is. The reason that my hosting business focuses on selling cPanel hosting is simple: it is a more evolved control panel.

If the server admin knows what he is doing, cPanel can easily be a more pleasant experience for the end user than Direct Admin can be. The only real problem with cPanel is its quirks that make the admins job a bit harder. If the admin is good cPanel will be very secure, and the user won't notice any quirks.

Partly due to Ross, I am now starting to offer DA accounts. From the feedback I have gotten so far users love it, but there are a few times when it simply is missing a few functions.

Wise decision.

I do have one major gripe about DirectAdmin though. It does NOT work behind most corporate firewalls, as it uses port 2222.

cPanel on the other hand works flawlessly. So if you intend on accessing your web host control panel from behind a firewall (for which you have no control over) I would re-consider cPanel over DA.
