I got a 96' Mazda 626LX to sell. But there is a body damage on the side of the car, estimated to around $600 to repair. It doesn't affect the wayit drives, it just simply looks uglier. My mom and I were leaning toward to repair that damage before selling the car (in hope to sell it at a higher price) But local auto repair store manager told us to just leave it as it is and sell it quick. His argument is that we won't be able to sell the car $600 more just because we spend $600 to repair that damage. So, what's your thought?
And I want to advertise my car in public, but everywhere I see, they charge a fee, I wonder if there is any free listing? either online or any other way. Thanks a lot!

Don't listen to the dealership.

If they do mean it, they better not bring down the price anymore than $600 saying there's a dent.

shop around for a cheaper cost to repair the damage, then repair then sell the car. Women especially can be really picky in buying a car and they often jugde the car by its exterior.

Also, I might try to bring the car to one of those used car dealers (carmax comes to my mind) and just ask them plain out how much my car still worth. I don't know how much they will b$tch about that dent, so is there anyone who has the same experience before? And how do used car dealers go about their work? Do they buy my car by cash and then sell it to public or they let me put the car in their store and charge a commission to it? Thanks.

ok, just went to carmax for a price quote...came out to be $1500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT THE FVCK IS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a 96' Mazda 626 LX with a dent on the side only worth $1500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I saw them sold a 97' Mazda 626 LX, one year newer than mine and 15k less mileage, for $8395!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe, we should boycott these used car dealers!!!

They are just trying to screw ya to get a nice markup after they fix it. I would boycott used car dealers, but I am about to close a sweet deal on a nice 95 Avalon XLS. 😛

CarMax sucks ass.....do not sell your car there. One of the mistakes ive made in the past few years. They will rip you off in a heartbeat. Definatly sell it yourself.

Thanks viper22 and Duffman!
My mom and I have decided to get the car fixed. Maybe we can't sell it $600 more just because we spend that much to repair, but we hate people bitching about the dent and stuff. I was thinking $3000 would be ridiculously unacceptible, and yet, Carmax came out with $1500!!!!!! I really wonder how they conduct their business.

They don't sell cars that have body damage like that (indication of an accident). Even if you get it repaired, they'd still be able to tell. To them, the car is about worthless, because they'd buy it from you, run it through the carwash, and head down to an auto auction and hope for the best.

Is the damage due to an accident? If it is, that's probably why you're getting such a low value. If i were you, i would repair it, and then sell it privately. Of course tell the buyer the history of the car, because he could just as easily find if it's been in an accident by doing a VIN search.

The used car market is not a sellers market right now, because of all the people trading cars in to buy @ 0% financing. Even so, $1500 does seem low if the damage is as superficial as you describe.

No, it was not really a "car accident" it's just that I was careless when parking the car and hit the side of wall. No mechanical breakdown or whatsoever. So, this is quite frustrating. And I don't think the used car market has ever been seller's market, it seems to me that used car dealers always have the upper hand.
