I think pretty much any docsis cable modem will work fine. I have had a toshiba and a motorola and haven't noticed a difference. I use the toshiba now.
Just purchased an RCA cable modem - matched the one I was "leasing" from ATT before I purchased it. Works real well. Other people I've talked to here are using a Linksys model. They seem to be happy with it. I've seen the RCA and the Linksys for about $89 at BestBuy and Curcuit City in the past week.
I, for some damn reason am partial to the surfboard modem. I decided to buy my modem and the surfboard was used and wouldn't have come with a waranty. So, I bought the Toshiba which came with a five year waranty and was less than $100 (they were having a special on it) like $30 per bill for making payments. I have since seen it in stores for like $140 so it was a good deal. I have noticed NO difference between the two except for, well the way it looks and the surfboard was more weighted and seemed sturdier. Then I saw this mod for the surfboard at this address Text and now I WANT IT BACK! 🙁 Pretty cool mod ehh. So back to the point, there is no technical/performance difference between the two and probably all the docsis cable modems.
