hello. i installed vmware 3.1 beta right now and i want to boot into the existing win2k OS that i have installed.... when it boots it says "Operating Systen not found" =\ why wont it boot? is it because the drive is connected through the onboard raid controller? is there a driver disk i need to get? i really want this to work so pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease help me!

here is what i have on my epox 8k7a+ highpoint 370a raid mobo:

highpoint controller:
--pri master--win2k
--pri slave--mandrake 8.2
--sec master--backup files/storage
--sec slave--4 gig mp3 hd

on the onboard ide:
--pri master--lite-on
--pri slave--pioneer
--sec master--zip 100
--sec slave--nothing

2 probs.. first: my cdrom goes SUPER SLOOW.. takes forever to do anything with it. whats the deal with that? im sure some of you have had that prob. =P

second: how do i get it to run 640x480 and 256? when i look at the video settings, it only shows 32bit and 800x600 as lowest and 1152x864 as highest =\

and one more thing: how do i get sound working

I've always considered booting a real OS in VMWare a bad idea, because the hardware VMWare tells the VM you have isn't what you really have so atleast you need 2 hardware profiles.

I don't know why CD-ROM access is slow. This only happens with Winblows guests.

CD-ROM access is great for Linux guests. I've searched their newsgroups to no avail. If it's important to you, you might open up a support ticket.

For sound, you manually install a Sound Blaster 16 audio card (after enabling the virtual device). Read their documentation on the web; it's pretty extensive and informative.

Funny, my WXP guest (on a virtual disk) only allows 16-bit video, at the standard resolutions between 640x480 and 1152x864.

Except, after switching from 640x480 to 800x600, now the control panel setting for 640x480 is gone!

So maybe the VMware SVGA driver is a little buggy?

LOL, I've been using VMware since 1.0 and have never seen that before.

Why don't you install a Windows guest under a virtual disk to see how it works under pristine conditions?

Well since that's a WXP guest, maybe you already did a clean install.

What's your video card? Driver? X-Windows version?
