Pretty cold considering you can go to your local BJ's Wholesale and get a 100-pack of Fuji's (taiyos) for $36+tax, or perhaps that Best Buy deal with Fuji 50-packs for $9.99.

Yeah I'd like to see TY's for $10 a spindel.

As far as the Fuji's, they're really rated at only 16x. Yeah, Taiyo's or not, most 24x writers will only write to them at 16x. I use em in my 16x writers, but use real 24x Taiyo's in my 24x writers.

I know that some Fuji's are TY. But not all of them. Is there any way to tell without bringing them home and testing them?

All Taiyo Yuden's are made in Japan so look for the place of manufacture on the spindle. You'll also find that HP branded CD-Rs are almost always Taiyo Yuden and most Sony's as well.

Also some other things to check for a TY cdr:
-the 50cdr spindles have off white, ivoryish(?) colored screw on top things, you'll know one if you see it, it doesnt look like any other ones
-the inside part of the CDR, the clear plastic part around the hole in the middle, is a frosted clear instead of water clear plastic on TY (the TY have frosted middles)

Some HP cdr's are TY, i like the HP better than the fuji a little bit, they seem more durable on top I guess, just user preference though

all my fuji cdrs are TY, and I'm not sure if there is any other manf for Fujifilm, since no one has shown proof, but you can never be sure i guess ;)

The posting from CDRMediaworld is quite old and out of date. The information they give for Imations is also out of date, and I think also the TDK's.
All the 12x and higer Fujifilms I have bought have been TY. As mentioned in one of the posts above, look for the country of manufacture by the UPC on the back of the spindle. It should say Made In Japan. I have gotten them for as low as $7 from several Office Max deals, but usually going for about $10 for a spindle of 50.

Imations used to be TY but have since gone to mostly CMC Magnetics... Not the quality they once were. And all the latest TDK Certified +'s I have seen are now Made in Taiwan, so I don't bother with them any longer either...

Some will say that it doesn't matter what brand they are, as long as you use a good burner... I have to disagree. Its not so much a matter of having coasters, but the longevity of the data once its been burned.

i dont quite understand people's needs for Taiyo's nowadays. I use discs from CMC magnetics, supposedly one of the worst manufacturers, and never have a bad burn, and my CDs dont fall apart. All that's really important is 1) quality burner (mines a Teac w/burnproof) and 2) the top of the CD cant scratch off (i use imations and they dont). Then just dont leave them in heat or anything and you're fine.

also important is the ablility of a cd-rom/cd player to be able to read the media. i know that the cheap generic stuff i got before was really horrible, half the time it wont read in a few of my cdroms... and they werent generic cdroms either, plextor, etc..

the taiyo fujis i have now, everything reads them. not a single problem that i've come across

see i think that was true a couple year ago. but with advances in burners and, most likely, better 'bad' media - the combination today works just fine, i think. now i think with like 16x burners, they're good enough. i dont know thats just the impression i get

Correct. "Valsalva" as in "Valsalva maneuver." ...I tip my hat to you, for making the association. In contrast, when I engage in lively debates with the intolerant Christian-folk of Anandtech, they usually think themselves enormously clever, when they "accidentally" call me "Saliva." In reality, they further perpetuate their own ignorance. But that is right..."Valsalva" is in reference to the maneuver.

i went to office max and they are clearancing the hp's 50pack for $14

this ones:

ATIP: 97m 24s 01f
Disc Manufacturer: Taiyo Yuden Company Ltd.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 73f / LBA: 359848)

they wont carry these ones anymore, and the other onse that they are taiyo too now i think are the new sony...what i realized is that all the taiyo's come in the same cdr spindle, no matter the brand they put on them they have the same cdr spindle.

Are these rated at 16X?

Some HP's are rated at 16x. My local Staples carries the 24x variant, though. $25 for a 50-spindle is pretty steep...
