Companies can legally do pretty much anything they want.
Especially regarding vacations.
They can even require you to use all your vacation time during a specific month or season.
EDIT: unless you have a signed contract with them stating otherwise.

we are getting the 24-26th off as paid company holidays. 🙂
Unless you have a signed contract....the company can do whatever they want regarding vacations....time or money. They can even knock your salary down 10% tomorrow if they wish.Originally posted by: Bryophyte

But the big question is whether vacation time is paid or unpaid normally. If unpaid, fine, but if paid, then this is not acceptible.

Read up on FMLA. I was able to take 5 weeks off when my daughter was born and charge it to my sick leave (I have hundreds of hours racked up) instead of vacation leave.Originally posted by: CT2TXtech
They are docking 8 hours from my vacation time. But its running low, and wanted to save as much as I can for the birth of my son in 4 weeks. Thats one less day i get to spend with him...

True, but FMLA still applies to everyone in some respect so it's good to read up if you have a kidlet on the way.Originally posted by: CPA

Most of us don't work for the government, so we can't roll over sick time.

Don't you get your vacation replenished on January 1, 2004?
In four weeks, you should be in good shape because you should be using '04 vacation time and not '03.
Unless your not being entirely accurate about how your vacation time is distributed.
Anyway, I agree. Quit your whining.
I work for a company that's laid off 11,000 people.
I'm not bitching about anything these days.
Not as long as those checks keep rolling in every two weeks.
If your REALLY pissed, I suggest going into work armed with multiple automatic weapons.
That should turn things around for you.
Merry Christmas and congratulations on the impending birth of your son.
You two can have a whine-off in a couple more weeks.
See who cries the loudest.

Then I can see them making you take an unpaid vacation, but I don't see how they could take 8 hours without compensation. Do you have any written proof that you normally get paid for vacation hours?

OK, My employer is a privately owned computer disty. I just got out of a meeting, and my boss told us that they will be closed on Dec, 24th. The thing is, she is docking 8 hours from our vacation time. Thats pretty sh!tty. Now Dec 31st is our floating holiday, so we will get paid for that day, but not for the 24th.
Tell me about it. My wife took the full 12 weeks (which is nice) but isn't getting paid (which sucks).Originally posted by: CPA

agreed, though you don't get paid on FMLA, which is tough.
