ok we need a baby gate for the stairs (at the bottom).

everything is either you drill in or pressure. one one side of the wall its uneven (can get a block of wood to fix that) but the other side has the banister. the pole is rounded so don't see how i can put it on.

any ideas?

Instead of a gate, why not just use of the baby fence deals to seal off access TO the stairs?

Something like thisbut that just blocks access to the stairs, not pens the kid in?

Try some 3M double-sided adhesive tape, like the type they use in the control tabs. I have some at work, but it is high bond and will jack up your banister finish when you remove it.

How about self-adhesive velcro tabs? Should be strong enough to keep a baby from moving it and easy to remove/replace the gate. Either that or buy some bungee cables.

You could try plastic zip ties for the side with the banister and get one with a gate that opens.

You can still drill into the post that holds up the banister, right? Got pics?

We used a couple of bungee cords to tie one end to the round banister.

baby > velcro.

bungee cables are probably the best bet tho.

Bungee chord the one you have to the railings or buy one of those segmented play yards like rivan suggested. You can use a portion of the play yard (or the entire thing folded) around the bottom of the stairs. The one I had came apart and you could use whatever length you want.

Segmented play yard

ohh the addon part would work.

but hopefully i can find a way and not spend more money

edit: hold on no that would not work. but would work with other gates.

we had the same problem
I think we were able to just use the pressure one on it though as it was at the bottom of our stairs and if the kid(s) DID knock it over we'd know just by the noise and there' be no way they could climb over it either.

I was more focused on cost/benefit. $5 fixes the problem, no electricity required. :)

Do NOT use bungee cables with the metal hooks on teh end.

If the baby is messing with them and they come undone, they can put out an eye.

I knew an adult who lost an eye using them to tie down some gear on his auto roof racks.

its rounded all the way to the handrail. the end of the gate (wood one) latches into a part you screw in.

Would it be possible to build a small "adapter" to the fence? Like this:

Link

Edit: This way it isn't a permanent attachment to the post, doesn't involve drilling directly into that nice rail or post, (might have to sand and refinish later!) and isn't too difficult. I'm guessing here, I don't know how safe it would be.

BUT THEN, you could just screw some lumber across that fence, and latch it to the wall somehow leaving the railing side unattached....that way you can unfasten the wall side and slide it through the rail when you need to pass through....

I have a similar issue that I need to address also, my 3 yr old boy thinks the stairs are an amusement park ride.

I'm thinking that maybe you could use a couple of round U-bolts around the round banister to attach something that can provide a flat surface for a pressure gate.

You could try something like a couple layers of bicycle intertube over the bolt to try to protect the wood, but I'm sure it would still leave a mark (and might even crush the wood when tightened enough).

We had a similar set of stairs to block when our kids were young. We decided to block them out of the hallway where the stairs were, rather than just the stairs.

Good luck!
