I did some damage to my knee about ten years ago. I was playing HS football and hurt the part right below my kneecap. They thought I had torn or strained something in that area, but the MRI's didn't show anything.

Now it is ten years later. I am on my feet all day and after work my knee is usually twice its normal size. Tonite is unbearable. When I try to walk on it, its fruitless. Just sitting here my knee is pounding in agony.

I need help. My doc wants to scope it to find out whats wrong, but I am not up for a surgery to find out what other kinds of surgeries I will need.

Please help me. I am in intense pain.

wait, a doctor wants to find out what the problem is with your knee. But you refuse and now you post on ATOT for a 2nd opinion?

Ice it for about 30 minutes at night. That will help the swelling. If it continues, you better follow the doc's recommendation. Arthroscopy isn't that bad. Your knee puffs up for a few days, but unless they do something to it structurally, you can use it the next day as much as you can stand to.

If they can't find the problem using x-rays/MRI's/ultrasound or any other non-invasive imaging, then your only option really is some kind of invasive diagnostic procedure. It's either that or live in pain for the rest of your life.

yeah?

I have this neat little cooler thing with an ice pack attached that I use nightly. Tonight it just made the pain worse.

I am not afraid of surgery, I just don't want to go in to find out that its just a stupid sprain or something.

my doc gave me some to strengthen my knee. I did them for a very long time, and nothing improved.

One thing I might add is that if I can get my knee to crack, the pain goes down by at least 50%.

If you've already been icing it and it's still getting worse, it's time for something else. When was the MRI done? 10 years ago, or recently? He should want a new one before scoping it. I wouldn't think a good doc would assume that since an MRI was done 10 yrs ago that a new one won't show anything different.

it was that long ago....I don't go to the doc's unless I think I am dying. I know tonite will pass and the pain will go away, but I don't know if I can deal with another night like this.

10 years is quite a long time for a sprain.

Hmmm.
My story: Had bad knee pain in my left knee for over a year. Did all the normal stuff. Got an MRI, showed torn cartilage.
Had it scoped in March 1998. Was better after the swelling and inflammation went away.
I was an avid bowler, and this was on my sliding leg, so that knee was getting a lot of work.
Anyway, I didn't bowl at all for over a year. Knee was okay.
Started back in 1999-2000 season, and before the end of the year, it was hurting again. I had to ice it every night after bowling or I'd be almost crippled the next day.
This went on until Feb. 2002 when, after getting my routine adjustment at the chiropractor (who got me back to work in the 90's after numerous MRI's, doctors, pain clinics, PT, drugs, etc, failed), he asked my how my health was otherwise.
I told him about the knee, and he told me to lay back down and let him look at it.
He spotted something wrong, and adjusted it.

I got up, and it hasn't hurt since. I couldn't believe it. I used to be hurting after the first game bowling. I waited a week to see if it was a fluke, and that weekend, I bowled some practice games.
12, to be exact. I hadn't practiced for years due to the pain.
My knee was 100%. The practice introduced some pain to several other muscles that hadn't been exercised in years, but the knee was fine.
Has been ever since.

You saying that it gets better if it pops brought this to mind. A chiropractor may or may not be able to help you. Might be worth a try, though.
Chances are, with the swelling you have, you probably have some cartilage loose. No big deal, get it scoped and quit hurting.

I had arthroscopy and a lateral release on my left knee in around September of '99. I've had knee problems since I was about 15 years old. (Chondromalacia--softening of the patella) Now my knee grinds like a mutha. It's also got arthritis. I'll tell you, the surgery isn't that bad and it may be worth it to find out what's wrong. You don't want torn meniscus. You may develop arthritis in it later like I did....but I don't know if that's a given or not. If I knew another surgery would fix my knees--even having had nine surgeries in the last eleven years--I would do it in a heartbeat. I'm sick of the grinding and hurting.

What they used to have me do after physical therapy is ice my knee for like 15 minutes. I'd freeze little Dixie cups half-full with water. I'd rub the ice over my knee.

Good luck.

Sounds like some loose cartilage. if that's the case, they'll probably be able to clean it up easy, first time. Modern arthroscopic surgery is a breeze, you'll probably just have day sugery, no overnight stay.
